The movie's aimed at a general audience, they're out to maximize their profit. And they're probably thinking... "oooh love triangle". People will eat that up. I hope you're right, but in the larger scope of the plot, in a "Superman" movie, what purpose would having Talia as a major character, have? This would be "edgy"

Yeah but the monopoly on love triangles is still being held by vampires and werewolves. I can't really see a love triangle of super heroes actually hitting it off the audience because the audience currently attracted to that sort of thing is not the same audience attracted to super-powered world savers. Here's my two theories:
My friend posted this on Facebook right after Man of Steel was released and I like it.
"Superman (disguised as mild mannered reporter Clark Kent of course) enters the research building where scientist Barry Allen does his work. Clark asks the receptionist to page Barry for their scheduled interview, so the receptionist calls him
and tells Clark....
'He'll be down in a flash' "
The second is a real head spinning love story, that could also go on at the same time as the Flash thing above. The whole movie, Batman is this quirky dude who's always talking about his Boo and hangs out a lot with Wonderwoman. Superman gets a bit jealous because he's got a thing for Princess, and assumes Bruce and her are an item. But, after an epic battle with the Martian Manhunter (who also uses some sort of mind control on Green Lantern to turn him into his minion), Clark discovers it is in fact Aquaman who was Batman's "Boo" the entire time, and he is free to court Wonder Woman as he wishes. But in the Justice League movie she shoots him down because she's an ultra feminist/misandrist. And they save the world from a Cyborg attack.
I have too much free time on my hands honestly

I'm thinking Shia Lebeouf as Aquaman.

If you walk down the street and ask people who Talia al Ghul is, you'd be lucky if 1 out of 10 people give you any answer.
If those 1 in 10 are just casual comic book fans then yeah. But if you're talking about the people this movie is aimed towards then people know who Talia is. Talia as the girlfriend material in this movie for Batman makes a hell of a lot more sense than Wonder Woman seeing how she's always portrayed as Supermans girl.
I'm not even a DC fan and I know who Talia is... I played Arkham City, though.

Talia is the single most important female character in Batman...you know because of the whole "Son" thing. But I suppose the average street person doesn't know he has a son either .

My comic book knowledge comes from my childhood in the '80s and some of the '90s. I had no idea who Ra's al Ghul was prior to Batman Begins. I realize the character was created earlier, but we were limited by what we were exposed to. I'd honestly say I had a moderate knowledge of DC and Marvel (as well as Image) back then- but this was before the internet. And this is why the references are earlier- like Dark Night Returns- because that's what we grew up with. Bane breaking Batman, etc- as impressionable teenagers / pre-teens, that had the most impact. Superman "dying" got full fledged nightly news coverage, being treated like the Pope was about to go.

I still wish they would do a movie of the Knightfall story where Jean Paul took over after Bane broke Wayne's back. I loved the batsuit redesign and how he was a more hardcore, murderous Batman that Bruce ended up having to pummel to set straight. JP was even more awesome when he became Azrael later.
I knew who al Ghul was because of the sweet 90's cartoon. Plus even though I was never in to comic books themselves, I liked reading about them in Wizard magazine.
And yeah, I remember hearing it in the mainstream news when Supes "died" and then later came back as the red and blue guys. I was like lol comics in the 10 o clock news.

Yes. Wizard was one of the greatest magazines ever. I guess that's not an "unpopular opinion" though.

My comic knowledge is really limited to movies, wikipedia and the 500 or so issues of Amazing Spiderman I have on my computer. I'd consider myself fairly knowledgeable compared to the average street person though. I'm really into it and want to be a lot more knowledgeable.

The first Assassins Creed is the best in the franchise
