I'll cheat & split my list into Western and Eastern RPGs, since they're almost different genres, now:
Western RPGs:
1) Skyrim
2) Dragon Age
3) Witcher 2
4) Fallout New Vegas
5) Deus Ex Human Revolution
Eastern RPGs:
1) Lost Odyssey
2) Final Fantasy XIII-2
3) Record of Agarest War
4) Star Ocean Last Hope
5) Blue Dragon
And I'll cheat again by listing a best-of-the-best: #1 - Mass Effect 2

Aaaand for making that distinction, you're my new best friend. Extra points would have been awarded for separating eastern European from US/English RPGs.

This and this. I totally +1ed this post. And an additional +100 for Lost Odyssey being in that list.

how can mass effect 2 be your favorite rpg when you didn't even list it in your top 5 for western rpgs.
that makes no sense.

I think he cheated to put 11 games in a top 5...

yeah but you would think it would be on the top of his western games list if it's his favorite rpg!

Yay- I could use a new friend. Lost Odyssey is without a doubt the finest Japanese RPG I've played since FFVII. On the small chance there's anyone reading this thread who hasn't played it yet- it'll be the best $15 you've spent in awhile. 4-disc goodness from Sakaguchi, with Nobuo Uematsu music that will take you back to a simpler time in gaming from your youth- but now with a pretty mature story.
It's too bad Microsoft's investment in this, & Blue Dragon, didn't pay off. I put Mass Effect separate because it wouldn't fit on my 5, & among (any) RPG this generation, that entire series rises above anything else. For all the complaining about the ending- Bioware actually gave us an updated one for free- in addition to all that free multiplayer content. I never saw Square Enix reissue a "clearer story" better explaining one of their convoluted FF endings, lately.
Oh, and (I too) am annoyed Agarest 2 didn't come to 360.

Square Enix just throws out convoluted sequels, and sequels to the sequels, apparently.
I still love them.

Lost Odyssey is one of my favorite games on the 360. Played through it multiple times. I've always hoped there would be some sort of sequel to it.

I actually enjoyed FFXIII-2 quite a bit, which's why it's on my list. I like the fact that you start with 2 characters, and keep them through the whole game. It was a simpler, tighter game- and I liked the Chrono Trigger (light) time traveling plot. Could have done without those clock puzzles, though.
I'd also like to add that while not an RPG, if anyone's on the fence about buying Catherine, do yourself a favor & pick up. It's on demand, as well. Loved everything about that game.

I have not played the Agarests- should I? Right now Fire Emblem Awakening basically owns my soul, so it might be time to try them...

That is not a good comparison. Agarest is good but not even in the same league as Awakening. I'd try Disgaea 3 and 4 on PS3 if you want similar quality.

I meant more gameplay. Obviously Awakening is one of the most fun games ever made... But I'm looking for strategy RPGs on Xbox. That's what agarest is, right? I don't know a ton about it. I have vandal hearts foj- I should go back to that...
And I love Disgaea, but my ps3 is currently out of service until my repair man grows a pair and reballs it.
