My Agarest playthrough alone- yeah 40-50hrs... AND I was uber power leveled by the DLC weapons. It's 5 chapters, and the 1st one can easily go 20-25hrs. Agarest Zero gets even better- you unlock the 1st game during your playthrough (in bite-sized form), I beat it all, but then you're suppose challenge the gods, and I didn't meet the requirements and would've had to start all over. So I considered it complete. Xcom yeah 25hrs I'd say.
I would also recommend if you're more leaning Agarest & want something like Awakening- check out THE LAST REMNANT from Square Enix:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Remnant
I had a lot of fun with it- and it (somewhat) turn based. My only issue is with the achievements, they're pretty unfair- and you get absolutely nothing for completing the game. You need a specific set of requirements to unlock the last fight, so online guides are required, so you don't mess up your playthrough. But is definitely worth playing. People complained about slowdown- but I didn't notice any-- just install the game and I had no issues.

Hmm I've been wanting to play The Last Remnant but I heard the frame rate issues were horrible, that was pre-HDD install though, just read it's actually not that noticeable if you have a clean Cache and it's installed. Might actually pick it up now.
Btw there's a True End guide for both of them, I recommend playing through both once naturally without a guide, then start a new game+ a lot of your stuff carries over like your Gold, PP, TP, etc... I'm in the True End section right now on Agarest and it can get really difficult at times especially in the Extended Boundary Plane even whilst being overleveled with awesome weapons.

Happy to help Danimal-- I played Last Remnant in 2011 with an install. Pretty sure there were patches too, that you usually get. I heard the same framerate issues back during when it was reviewed- encountered none of it. It's a really good game, unfortunately my gamerscore for it doesn't reflect those 50hrs, which's why I'm sour on those achievements. Would've had to start a completely new game (no new game plus in that one) to talk to specific people, to unlock the final boss that gives you the 200g's. I didn't realize that until I beat the game, and wondered why the achievement didn't pop. Oh... I was suppose to do the six-armed cat-man's character quest, and XYZ, to unlock it? But despite that, I'm still happy I played through it. It's got a lot of charm, and has a unique battle system... kind of an RPG / FF Tactics hybrid.

Good thing it's only like $10 on Amazon.
If you like those kind of games I definitely highly highly recommend all of the Fire Emblems.

I posted a review of Last Remnant not too long ago. It's less of a strategy game and more of a "Luck" roll the dice type. A battle could take 30 turns to win and only take you 1 the next attempt due to rolling a lucky EX attack.

Yeah, I didn't get a strategy feel at all from Last Remnant, I was surprised to see that come up in that context. But I played it so long ago, maybe I just don't remember.

Spectral Force 3 would be a extremely cheap option as well. 4.99 last time I saw it at gamestop. It's not bad.
I have Operation Darkness sitting on my shelf too but the camera almost ruins it entirely.

Haha I forgot about Operation Darkness! I got it 5 years ago when I was playing for score rather than fun, and neither was had.

PS3 has more strategy RPG's. Also Agarest moved to being a PS exclusive series after Zero.

Last Remnant you have 5 guys (or girls) to a squad, and you micro-manage who's the leader & who has what skills, battles play out on a grid of sorts- squad locations nearest to enemy squads initiate battles- if they do a ranged spell, could hit multiple squads nearby- can issue "wait" commands & bring in healers-- it's strategy without a top-down (or angled) view.
Spectral Force in my opinion hasn't aged very well. Vandal Hearts on PS1 looks better. Operation Darkness SOUNDS like a good game on paper- never tried it & heard to stay far away.

Yeah but you are overlooking the fact that all you can really do is move your units and select randomly generated commands. Strategy would imply you can actually control what your troops do.

True. Not to sound meta, but isn't that like life in general? You pre-assign skills, hope for the best- issue vague commands- and hope your avatars don't screw it up. The game didn't sell well, but maybe the developers were on to something. We'll see how the genre progresses in the future. I, for one- sort of enjoyed the randomness in the new XCOM, similarly. Roll of the dice, who was "gifted", and what they could specialize in. There may be a thing, in strategy / RPG games, as "too much" control. But that's up for debate.

They were certainly not on to something. Fire Emblem allocates random stats, XCOM: Enemy Unknown patched that in recently (You can activate it on options) and even Tactics rolled the dice with random faith and brave attributes. The difference is you could still control your troops. Randomness has always been a part of these games but once you take the puppets off the strings, it becomes a game of chance not skill.
Edit: The PC version of Remnant is also much better. Not being able to use most of the story characters at the same time was one of my biggest complaints and they fixed it on PC.

Right, yeah I agree on that- the PC improvement of having complete control in who you put on your team, and being able to not have to chose the generic types, would've been a better experience.

How hard would it have been for Square-Enix to patch the maximum general limit. One little number and it would have made the game three times better.
