i honestly do not know what you're talking about, the only thing i can see similarity-wise is 7 and 8 characters used in 13 (I.E. Venil and Selphie). I'm terribly sorry the characters all look the same to you, i was unaware Cloud and Barret looked alike. Or Squall and Zidane. Or Kuja and Tidus. OR ANY characters for that matter. They retain a similar art style, is that what you're referring to? With the wavy hair and the buckles and bullshit. Or maybe you've only played the older FF's and get the sprites confused with each other, which his understandable. They're sprites. But to say that all the characters look the same and it's irritating is straight ignorance and makes me wonder how many FF's you've actually played. No FF has the same story (Maybe the same theme like saving the world from Ex-Death in 6 and saving the world from Kuja in 9, or collecting crystals in the first 5), each game has a different system (Materia system in 7, Junction system in 8, job system in 6) and their own play styles (having 14 playable characters in Type 0, each having their own special and fighting style, or equipping items in 9 to learn abilities.)
That's not to say FF has it's blunders. 12 was a GIANT LOAD OF SHIT. as was 11, and 13, and 14. 15 has my hopes high, menus are still there but the battle system has changed up majorly to something similar to Kingdom Hearts, so no more sitting there for Turn Based action.
tl;dr FF characters aren't the same. Proof is in the pictures.

But I think they mean that square pretty much has 5 hairstyles for characters, lol. The 15 ad could be for AC- I found myself looking for Reno.

Some Final Fantasy characters look similar or remind you of one another due to Squaresoft abusing the same archetype in every game. While I agree most look different I can't help but to notice some trends...
For example:
Tidus/Zidane/Vaan/Hope = Blond bitch boys.
Tifa/Rinoa/Yuna/Ashe/Serah = Pure maidens.
Yuffie/Dagger/Rikku/Penelo/Vanille/Selphie = Rebellious teens.
Edea/Lulu/Fran/Fang = Goth chicks.
Barrett/Sazh = Stereotypical black dudes
Vincent/Seifer/Auron/Balthier/Noctis = Badass dudes
Quistis/Beatrix/Lightning = Uptight bitches
Cloud/Snowe = Weather
