1. one of the creators was named Cid, so it's a wink to him. Also, there is a Cid in Lost odyssey as well, that is because Hironobu Sakaguchi (a founder of Square as well) and a few other key employees broke off to form Mistwalker.
2. final fantasy was made in a last ditch effort to save Square's ass from collapsing financially. As you can see, it did that really well. Final Fantasy is still around probably because people like it. shocking, i know.

more power to ya then man, i tried for a while to get this one on both DR 2 & DR otr, the fact that you have to kill that many damn zombies isn't as bad as the fact you only get 20gs for it
