7/10
Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (Blu-ray, 2nd viewing) – an improvement over the original in every aspect. I like that they decided to give Han Solo a more central role, Harrison Ford is made for the role. You also have to love it for the introduction of Yoda, who doesn’t love him? Also, there’s more development for Luke, who’s becoming a great Jedi. It’s not often you get to say that the sequel is superior to its predecessor, but this is one of those rare cases.
7.5/10
Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (Blu-ray, 2nd viewing) – actually my favorite of the original trilogy, which plants me firmly in the minority. I found this to be the most “fun” film of the series, with the first 45 minutes being my favorite. I thought the conclusion was good, and as with the previous entry, more Han Solo time = awesome. I think most people’s complaints about it being a little too light are not necessarily unfounded, but I was fine with the direction they took.

**Star Wars wrap-up**
So that wraps up my run of the Star Wars films. Overall, I think it’s a great sci-fi series that is better as a whole than any of the individual films are. That’s not always the case with these big, epic series, but I think Star Wars can be the exception.
I’d rank them like this:
6th – Episode IV: A New Hope – 7/10
5th – Episode I: Phantom Menace – 7/10
4th – Episode II: Attack of the Clones – 7/10
3rd – Episode V: Empire Strikes Back – 7.5/10
2nd – Episode III: Revenge of the Sith – 7.5/10
1st – Episode VI: Return of the Jedi – 8/10
As far as a score for the whole deal, I’d probably be comfortable going with an 8/10. I would imagine LotR would rank higher, and possibly some of the Marvel/DC series, but overall it’s definitely up awesome as a series. I doubt any of the individual films would crack my top 25-50, though.
**/ Star Wars wrap-up**
Gamer (Blu-ray, 2nd viewing) – was a bit of a disjointed viewing because the disc was freezing/crashing, but it was only 3-4 minutes of missed footage – not really enough to have much of an impact. It starts off with a bang (literally), but it’s essentially just 90 minutes of violence and sex, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but don’t expect much in the way of story or character development. I did like Michael C. Hall; although he didn’t have a lot of screen time, he was good in his role. This is pretty fun the first time around, but doesn’t hold up well with a repeat viewing.
6/10
Captain America (Blu-ray, 2nd viewing) – probably my least favorite of the 1st phase movies, and that’s not something I say lightly, as I’m a Marvel nut. I feel like this solely exists for The Avengers. I guess all of the 1st phase movies do to some degree, but this one has that feeling more than the rest. Chris Evans makes a great Cap., and hats off to them for getting Tommy Lee Jones and Hugo Weaving, they make most anything better. All in all, I think it’s a good Marvel movie, but not their best.
7.5/10
Hancock (Blu-ray, 2nd viewing) – is a surprisingly good little superhero spoof film with Will Smith in the title role. He’s as good as always, and Bateman and Theron are both good in their supporting roles. There have been strong rumors of a sequel, and I would love to see Smith and Berg (director) both back. Speaking of Berg, I think he’s a decent filmmaker; his films haven’t always been well received, but they’re always entertaining – The Rundown, The Kingdom, Hancock, Battleship, Friday Night Lights.
7/10
The Last Stand (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – it’s really just your typical action movie, but some nice action, and a decent return for Arnold make this one worth recommending. Most of the action and dialogue are way over the top, but it stays true to its roots as a clone of the 80s and 90s action flicks.
6.5/10
Devil (DVD, 2nd viewing) – I think it’s one of my favorite thrillers to come out in recent memory. It’s short, to the point, and stays suspenseful and chilling to the end. I honestly didn’t see the conclusion coming.
7/10
The Grey (Neflix, 2nd viewing) – I think this was actually marketed very poorly. Going in, I was expecting more of a pure survival story with a focus on the action/adventure side of things. While all of that is there, it has a level of depth that most of those movies never reach. As far as the survival action/adventure side goes, it’s your pretty standard fare, but Neeson’s performance is outstanding, and there is surprising depth to it. I didn’t like it as much as the second time around, but it’s still a solid film.
7/10
A bit of a weird movie, but it has a good message throughout, nudity, and a bunch of people talking crap on the retail business. I really liked it.
Good time action shoot em up. Lousy title. Reminds me too much of the Monster Squad.
Quite a few funny parts.
Dead Space: Downfall (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I’ve been thinking about replaying the Dead Space series, as I haven’t made it to 2 or 3. I figured this would be a decent place to start, as it chronicles the takeover of the mining colony as well as the Ishamura. The animation isn’t the greatest, but it’s got some decent action and gore.
4/10
Commando (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – it’s a good old cheese fest from the 80s with Arny playing the title role. I think it does a good job of what it sets out to do, but don’t expect anything beyond that. There’s some absolutely laughable dialogue, and the special effects are horrendous. If you want to turn off for a bit, this is great.
5/10
The Goods (DVD, 2nd viewing) – decent comedy that ends before it gets annoying. It really benefits from an appearance by Will Ferrell.
5/10
Safe House (Blu-ray, 2nd viewing) – I really, really want to love this, as I’m a fan of Washington and Reynolds, but it mostly just slips into mediocrity. The big standout is the scene where the “bad guys” come to get Frost from the safe house; that action scene is great. There are some decent hand-to-hand combat scenes later on that are good, too. The story for the most part is a little too familiar.
6.5/10
A Good Day to Die Hard (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I’ve never seen the series as high art, like some seem to. Sure, some of the others are a bit better, but this one isn’t anymore over the top than the others. Jai Courtney is going to be a household name before it’s all said and done. Give this a chance; it’s not a bad action movie.
6/10
Galaxy Quest (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – fun little comedy sci-fi spoof of the crazy Trek fan world. It definitely benefits from a great performance by Tim Allen. I didn’t enjoy it as much as I did when I was a kid, but it passes the time well enough.
6/10
Accepted (DVD, 2nd viewing) – slightly below average comedy for me. I’m all for suspending reality when it comes to film, but this is just stupid. There’s no way parents would fall for this. It’s also far too tame for a “teen comedy”.
4/10
No Country for Old Men (Blu-ray, 3rd viewing) – The Coen Brothers are probably my favorite directors, so it wasn’t a shock I liked this so much. If you haven’t seen it by now, well then you’re missing out. This has pretty much everything you need for a great movie. As good as Jones and Brolin are, they’re completely overshadowed by Bardem in this.
9/10
Most people under 20 would probably find this too long and boring, but I found it very enjoyable. Mostly because I love Leslie Mann. I also like comedies that "go there" and the unrated version of this does. Well, mostly. I was mad I didn't get to see any ham during the gynecologist scene but still a great movie. Also there is a prolonged scene where Leslie Mann plays with Megan Fox's breasts, which is great because Fox's thumbs aren't visible.
Hansel & Gretel: Witchhunters (unrated) - 3/5
Decent action and I really liked Gemma Arterton as Gretel (she played the princess in Prince of Persia and was a Bond chick in one of the newer 007 movies). The witches in the movie were kind of dumb except the one played by Famke Jenssen (aka Jean Grey). I have seen both versions and the unrated one is just a bit more violent/gory. I was promised nudity but it only has a scene where you see this lady's butt.
Dune (2000) - 4/5
I am a huge fan of the Dune novels and this does the first one great justice. The version I watched is actually the 2002 2-disc Director's Cut DVD of the 3-part mini-series. This makes it very long to watch but gets a lot of small details right and overall does a really good job relating the epic sci-fi story, especially considering that it was a Sci-fi channel mini-series and they probably didn't have a huge budget to work with. There are still some parts that the David Lynch-directed 70's movie does better, but this version is the one I'd recommend to the curious.
