Looper - 9/10 - Really enjoyed this movie.
I have never shined to Ryan Gosling or taken director Nicolas Winding Refn (Valhalla Rising) seriously however "Drive" may have made me a fan of both. It's a very underrated story about how simple kindness can change a cold blooded shell into a hero. I can't wait for them to sign off on the sequel.
Bug – pretty creepy, psychological horror film. I can’t say a lot positive, but it was fairly unique.
4/10
Click – above average comedy, and probably one of the last “good” (its relative), comedies that Sandler’s done. The last 1/3 is actually pretty effective.
6/10
Too Big to Fail – I had to watch this for college, but I thought it was good regardless. I enjoyed this more than Margin Call, as I found the government intervention side-story a little more intriguing.
6/10
Expendables 2 – much like the first, it’s just good, dumb fun. There’s something quite remarkable about watching Stallone, Willis, and Schwarzenegger blow baddies to bits.
7/10
The Grey – I didn’t expect this to be as deep as it was, so I was pleasantly surprised by the atheistic/philosophical undertones that popped up from time-to-time. I think it was probably a little too deep for what it was marketed as.
8/10
Contraband – completely unremarkable movie, average in every aspect.
5/10
Get Low – worked on a couple of levels, but didn’t excel at either of them. Duvall, Murray, Black, and Spacek turned in some great performances, though.
7/10
The monsters were fun but the protagonist was uninteresting and the pacing was bad. Good actors, tepid writing. I kept waiting for it to go batshit crazy and all it did was fizzle.
Branded - 4/5
Surprisingly artsy and aggressively thought-provoking, I can definitely see why this did poorly in theaters and fell off the radar. Strong recommend for cinephiles & people that stay conscious while Netflixxing.
10/10 I love this movie.
