As someone who actually played FFXI, you have to respect the fact that it lasted as long as it did- over the World of Warcraft kool-aid, it held its own for quite awhile. (longer than Star Wars Galaxies) I personally got a fair amount of enjoyment out of it, & it was an innovative title in the early (or so) MMO landscape. FFVII cannot be denied that it brought JRPGs to mainstream appeal, for quite awhile, and has since died down. But many PS1 / PS2 era JRPGs, would never have been translated, if it weren't for FFVII. Is it the greatest? No. But my list was influenced by "influence" on the gaming world, as a whole. Replaying FFVII right now on my Ouya, the sense of depression and hopelessness in the early Midgar scenes, as a tone, (sorry speaking as a filmmaker) it set a really distinct mood, and (pre-911) the rebel / terrorist underdog, vs the "corporation" was something everyone could relate to. My own personal bias puts 6 ahead of 7, but if you're speaking as a true critic (and not metacritic which is bullshit), 7 has, and will, have the most influence out of the entire franchise. 2nd would be #1, (by influence alone), then X, for incorporating JRPGs into the next century, with the voice-acting, systems, and storytelling, which set a precedence for direct sequels (FFX-II), for better or worse. (not counting Dirge of Cerebus)

Game trailers posted it's top 10 final fantasy games here's the list

10. Final Fantasy XI
9. Final Fantasy
8. Final Fantasy III
7. Final Fantasy V
6. Final Fantasy X
5. Final Fantasy VII
4. Final Fantasy XII
3. Final Fantasy IV
2. Final Fantasy IX
1. Final Fantasy VI

Pretty solid list.

Edit: I should specify but pretty good, I mean that sarcasically.

6 and 9 are my top 2 but ff 12 is not deserving of being in the top 4.

Any FF list with XII listed above VII, VIII and X is a ******* joke. IX is definitely not in the top two in the series. Maybe if your 12 years old or Snapple. This is worse then your shitty basketball legend list where it had MJ in 8th place. The fact it doesn't even list VIII makes it all the more irrelevant.

I agree with you. My only point, was that a "top" list, should take elevation of the gaming medium, as a whole, in that consideration. It's pretty universally agreed that the FF II system was ass. FFX introduced the sphere grid, & in the (advanced?) JP version, you could start people wherever you want- so Yuna could've been your soldier, and Auron your magic king. Which goes back to the earlier systems refined from FFIII, and V. IX was nostalgia more than innovation (though still very good), and such was a similar case, with XII. Personally if they continued the (open-ness) from XII, in XIII, refined like III was, to V, they would've been much better off. XIV holds a fair amount of promise, for now. I respect you all, for having no argument where VI is relatively ranked. They don't make them like that, anymore. For better, or worse.

I'd rank Tactics better then V, XI, XII, XIII, XIV. Easily should be in the top 10.

VI, VII, then Tactics (for me). I just consider it a spinoff, since it's derived from a novel, so it's an adaptation, in theory. That furthers my point-- that I honestly don't think Final Fantasy Tactics would have released in the United States and Europe, etc, if FFVII hadn't done so well. Cloud was a hidden character. That was by design. And the name itself was meant to boost sales, which I promptly bought day-1, back then. My first thought (somewhat pre-internet), was "oh, this is like Front Mission!" (because I used to import). Enter 100+ hrs of fun. Emulators, and the PSP re-release.

I played xi for years. I loved it. But it was a fun mmorpg- not so much a great final fantasy. And it wasn't groundbreaking or anything special in the mmo scene.
