I bought a house. Had one of my followers stay there and have had no issues whatsoever yet in losing my items.
Well houses are a given. But i'm not activating dragons or the civil war till I hit level 50. Houses are not terribly easy to come by if you factor out that freebie in whiterun. I was hoping at LEAST the Arch Mages Quarters would be safe. But nope, all my shit disappeared after 30 days.
Did you try storing shit in the safe in the Arch-Mage's quarters? It's on floor across from the foot of the bed. I haven't been awarded the quarters yet since I'm currently unable to continue the college questline but I noticed it when I was stealing everything in there that wasn't nailed down. Oh and FYI, the house in Whiterun isn't free. It costs 5K and you can only buy it when the Jarl names you Thane of Whiterun and you've done 5 help quests for people in Whiterun.

It is free if you talk to the dude who sells it to you while he's sleeping. Go through all the dialogue with him when he gets up from sleeping, back out when you select the option to pay him with B, put all your gold into his night stand, bam. Free house. You can do this in every city.

I would not store stuff in the mages quarters. Take it from me. Whether its 50 days or 5, sooner or later your shit will poof out of existance.
FYI Breezehome is free as in you don't have to run around doing good-deeds for townsfolk to unlock it. Your given thaneship right out of the gate. I had to do like 7 mini quests and a scooma drug bust to unlock Rifkin's thane. Plus 5k is about what I get everytime I unload worthless leveled weapons anymore. Gold is irrelevant after level 30. Plus simply stashing your gold in a drawer before they finish thier sentence while selling it to you, completely negates them charging you for it anyway. Buy it, run to a drawer, store gold before they finish the sentence. Free house.

New issues now. I unlocked the house Hjerim in Windhelm after the blood on the ice quest. Got all the upgrades. Walked in my front door....
and got jumped by a immortal (non killable) sociopath. Is there anyway to fix this bug? Or am I stuck with a freeloading serial killer forever?

I finally got around to trying this out last night and it did work but I ran into a couple humorous complications. For one, I ran around Windhelm for a few minutes trying to find the steward's quarters only to find him sleeping on a bed-roll on the floor in the kitchen of all places.
So I had to stash my gold in one of the sacks lying next to his bed-roll. I was able to use the trick to buy that house and all the furnishings as well.
The other complication came in Markarth where the steward's quarters were locked at night so I had to pick the lock only to find out you can't try stashing your gold in his night stand cause it only gives you the option of stealing from it and each time I tried stashing my gold in it, he would yell at me, call me a thief and not complete the transaction. Luckily, there's a barrel right outside and to the left of his door so I was able to back out of the conversation after telling him I was buying the house and run out to stash my gold in the barrel. I then remembered it's locked (even after/if you've liberated Markarth for the Stormcloaks and switched stewards) because of the one miscellaneous quest where that elven douche wants to find evidence of Talos worship by the original steward and asks you to break into his room.

How do you unlock the War Hero achievement after you've already completed the main story line and the civil war events?

Well the War Hero cheevo is for capturing Fort Sungard or Fort Greenwall which is the first fort you take during the Civil War quest line so if you've finished the Civil War and captured Solitude or Windhelm then that cheevo must have glitched on you.

That's fantastic. I don't think I have it in me to start another story line. I suppose I'll wait till some DLC comes out down the road to re-invest some time into this game.
Thinking about, I do have some multiple saves. I hope that works.

I just read the list of fixes on bethblog, this quests correct name is “Revealing the Unseen”. Weird typo, Ill cross check and see if theres any other differences.
All I know is after not getting that stupid crystal to focus on three different saves, I was happy to see this in the list.
