I surprised myself when I realized I had not read this one before. I could've sworn I read it a few years back when I went on a huge Vonnegut kick.
Of the dozen Vonnegut novels I've read, that is now my least favorite. It reads like the ranting of a manic bi-polar jumping from one incoherent thought to another complete with juvenile little drawings. After 200 pages I was struggling to finish it and it was dangerously close to joining The Sirens of Titan and Galápagos on the short list of his novels that I gave up on. I was hoping something in the last 100 pages might redeem it for me but it didn't. I really wanted to like this novel but I honestly think it is his most overrated work. After that disappointment, I'm gonna reread my favorite novel of his to wash the bad taste out of my mouth.

@Irish OH--you ought to re-read Breakfast of Champions in a couple years, I am curious how your opinion would change then.
I've only read Slaughterhouse Five myself but your musings have made me want to track down a cheap copy of Slapstick.
@RawrShark--have you, by chance, read The Raw Shark Texts? You should.

I don't know man. Had I read it back when I went on a Vonnegut reading tangent I might feel differently but I'm older and a bit more cynical now. I've loved just about all his other novels that I've read multiple times like Slaughterhouse-Five and Slapstick but I also enjoyed those thoroughly the very first time I read them. Breakfast of Champions is different from every other novel of his I've read and I guess at the time he intended it to be his last novel and sort of a fuck all but yet he still went on to right a bunch of other novels.
Vonnegut truly had a knack for creating flawed protagonists but still managed to make you love them in some manner but not BoC. Neither of the two main characters, Dwayne Hoover and Kilgore Trout, were the least bit endearing to me. Slapstick will always be my favorite since it was the very first novel of his I read. Slaughterhouse-Five, Mother Night, Cat's Cradle and Timequake round out my top five.

Yes it is! He's written another book since then, and it falls between the 4th and 5th book... It's called the Wind through the Keyhole.
It's a great standalone book that brings back all the characters, but unnecessary if you're just getting through the story... For everyone out there that just wants a little more Dark Tower adventuring though, I highly reccomend it.
@Meta: YES I HAVE!!! I actually found The Raw Shark Texts AFTER I chose my Gamertag, so I HAD to pick it up... Fantastic book

Finished Slapstick and moved on to something I haven't read yet:
One of the few of his books that I haven't read yet. I figured now would be the perfect time with it being the 40th anniversary and all.

A Storm of Swords. I read it once when it first came out but I was in the mindset to see what happens next - not taking in the details. It's hard to understand all of the little stuff I missed along the way just focusing on the larger picture.

The Name of the Wind. Trying to, anyway. I don't doubt it's a good book, but I am just not in too much of a reading mood recently.

I finished that one a few weeks ago and sticking with the nonfiction I've been reading:
