Sex Tape - Pretty funny movie. Worth a redbox! 6/10

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For - This didn't do so well in theaters but I still enjoyed it for what it was. I think it's better than machete kills but I want them to both have a third installment! 6.5/10

High Tension - I remember people talking about how crazy this movie was but I was pretty young when it came out. Having it on my dvr for a few months, I decided to watch it. Overall it's pretty good and I enjoy the directing aspect of it. Worth a watch if you like foreign horror movies. 7/10

Attack on Titan - This show was everybit of fantastic. Wish they would make more but I doubt it. Hands down one of my top 5 best anime's. 9/10

That Awkward Moment - Didn't know how this was gonna be but it was late and I wanted to see a comedy. I actually came out enjoying this alot and laughed pretty hard at some parts. Worth a watch or maybe even a $10 purchase. 7.5/10

Donald Glover: Weirdo - This was pretty damn funny My 1st time seeing him do anything other than rap. I enjoy his music alot, plus I heard Community is pretty funny. Overall he's pretty good as a stand up comic. 7/10

Horrible Bosses 2 - Just got back from seeing this and it's pretty funny. I enjoyed it the whole way through and Chris Pine being added to the list of fantastic actor's is a plus. Worth a watch in theater if you can! 7.5/10

Don Jon - Not my favorite work of JGL by any means. Overly heavy handed symbolism and a less than stellar ending left me wishing I had spent my time with another title. 5.5/10

Titanica - documentary originally filmed for Imax theaters, featured briefly throughout is a survivor of the Titanic sinking who reminisces whilst we are shown footage of the sunken wreck. Informative and interesting documentary, at 1 hour it's not overly long. 7/10

Tl;dr post incoming

These were from 3 weeks and 2 weeks ago. Last week will follow later today/this week.

Monsters (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – a low-budget science fiction film set in modern times where a space probe crashes back to the surface of Earth, bearing extra-terrestrial beings. It’s low-key, and feels a lot like District 9, though is less actioney and frankly not as good. The lead actors have good chemistry, and the romance between the two doesn’t feel that forced. Worth a watch if you like some thoughtful sci-fi.
6.5/10

How to Train Your Dragon (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – pretty good for an animated film, especially when viewing it as an adult. The story is well done, the characters are good, and it moves along at an excellent pace. I would put this right up there with Frozen, possibly even a bit higher.
6.5/10

Jewel of the Nile (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I really enjoyed Romancing the Stone, and you’d think this would have a solid chance to be just as good when you have the leads coming back, but unfortunately it’s just not that good. The story isn’t well done, with the leads still dancing around their obvious romance, and a super generic dictator. Nothing inspired, features none of the originality and charm the original had.
4/10

Rain Man (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – Honestly, it’s a good movie, but what really sells it is the acting from Dustin Hoffman. It doesn’t have a particularly interesting story, but the antics shared by Cruise’s characters and Rain Man is excellent and easily make the movie worth recommending.
7.5/10

Quick and the Dead (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – enjoyed this a little more than I expected. It takes a simple concept, sticks to its guns, and executes well. It has a whole bunch of recognizable actors from the 90s, with Hackman being the best of the bunch playing the sadistic big man in the city.
6.5/10

Assassins (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – Not one of Stallone’s better movies, but a serviceable action movie nonetheless. Runs a little long, with just a few too many chase scenes, but manages to stay moderately entertaining throughout. Wouldn’t recommend it to anyone unless they’re trying to round out Stallone’s filmography.
6.5/10

Bull Durham (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – Good movie; very entertaining look at minor league baseball. Costner, Sarandon, and Robbins are all great, with their love triangle is one of the better ones in film to me. It has an excellent, neat conclusion, with all of the characters getting what they really want. Has a fair bit of comedy, drama, and romance that doesn’t make me nauseous.
7.5/10

Son of No One (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – meh, not an altogether bad movie; it at least gives Tatum an opportunity to show he can act in a dramatic role. The acting is all fine here, but the story is a bit far-fetched. Just another dirty cop drama, really.
5/10

Sanctum (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – wasn’t reviewed particularly well with critics, but I enjoyed it. The acting is competent enough (usually the most criticized element) for a survival flick like this. I was a little misled, though; I thought the film was more of a horror movie, but there’s not an element of that in it at all. It’s strictly about a group (10-12??) of cave divers who get stuck after a torrential downpour (that no one saw coming somehow) floods them in. It doesn’t do anything real well, but is a breezy 100 minute affair.
6.5/10

Die Hard 2 (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I liked it better than the original, only if because it wasn’t so overhyped. The villain is a little stock, but other than that it’s a solid action movie.
6.5/10

Die Harder: With a Vengeance (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – rounded out of my viewing of the Die Hard series with this. I liked this better than the most recent release, but falls short of the rest to me. I didn’t like the villain in this as much as the two previous entries and the sandbox where it all unfolds doesn’t work as well.
6/10

The Score (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – Pretty good heist film, in my opinion. De Niro doesn’t turn in one of his better performances, but it’s a solid entry in his body of work; same for Ed Norton. Worth a watch for fans of the lead actors and the subject matter.
7/10

Swing Vote (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – Seems kind of like a stupid concept, but it’s done tastefully enough that it’s not too unbelievable. Kevin Costner is good, (but never great), there’s a strong supporting cast, and it’s a brisk enough affair to stay entertaining throughout.
6.5/10

Cabin Fever: Patient Zero (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I actually enjoyed the sequel more than the original, so I wasn’t too hesitant to check this out, despite some less than glowing critical reviews. I thought it was worth a watch, but nothing worth seeing unless you’re a big fan of the series. The actors are for the most part competent enough for a low-budget horror, but it begins to spiral a bit in the last half. The series has always been a little over the top with gore and the trend is continued here.
4/10

Odd Thomas (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I’ve been interested in the novel for quite some time, and I can honestly say I regret not reading it now. There’s still a good chance I’ll read it, but a lot of the mystery will be gone now that I’ve seen the film adaptation. It suffers a little bit from being a bit jumbled as far as the tone goes; shifting from horror, to comedy, to drama – and for the most part it’s not bad, but towards the end it makes a very strong leap that didn’t have the effect that it could possibly have had. Anyways, I liked it, and would recommend it.

Last week:

Sex Tape (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I actually thought it was a decent comedy. Diaz and Segal work well together, and Rob Lowe plays an awesome character – buttoned-down executive who secretly listens to Slayer, while doing some lines of cocaine. It goes a little over the top at times, but is fairly funny throughout.
6.5/10

Wolf Creek 2 (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – The first movie is excellent, with one of the most creepy, sadistic killers in recent memory. They take his character in this movie and add another level of depravity, but unfortunately the movie feels like it’s just trying to be gross and exploitive for the sake of being “out there”. Fans of stuff like Hostel and Saw won’t see anything they haven’t seen before, but this is definitely not a movie for the faint of heart. Serviceable slasher horror, but nothing more.
5/10

Red 2 (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I thought the first film was a decent action movie, but because it was released alongside The Losers and The Expendables, I always associated it with being second rate to those films. They don’t really add anything new to the mix this time around, and for the most part it’s a decent enough action movie. I will say that while he’s still a recognizable face and is okay at times, Willis is really fading with me. He’s settled into that point in his life where I’m guessing he’s just focused on milking the cow while he can, so he can fade into obscurity soon; the last ten characters he’s played are indistinguishable from one another.
6/10

Nebraska (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – Alexander Payne is one of my favorite directors, and he adds another excellent dramedy to his resume. I didn’t enjoy this as much as Sideways or The Descendants, but it’s every bit as good as About Schmidt to me. All of the acting is on point and the extended family members they encounter en route to Lincoln are all excellent for small-town folks. People who grew up in rural, conservative areas can definitely relate to many of the small things you’ll see here. Definitely recommended.
8/10

Machete Kills (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – It’s just as over the top and crazy as the first film, though it doesn’t feel quite as fresh this time around. Gibson makes for an excellent villain and it’s great to see him working again. I didn’t enjoy it as much Machete, but it’s still a fun watch if you check your head at the door. I stand by the opinion I’ve had for years in that Trejo is a horrendous actor, but fortunately he doesn’t have to do much of that here.

Silent Night Deadly Night - Came out in the mid 80's and it's a christamas slasher. I personally loved it. The story is crazy and if you haven't seen it then watch it for the holidays! 8/10

Cabin Fever 2 - Wasn't that bad, I enjoyed it for what it was. Gonna try the third one soon! 6/10

Grudge Match (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I enjoyed this way more than I probably should have. For all intents and purposes, it should be a little sad to see the icons in such a state, but it’s actually pretty funny, and the drama isn’t too overcooked for a sports drama. If you’re not too demanding of your comedies, you’ll like it. Don’t expect the next Raging Bull or Rocky; but frankly I don’t think that was their intention with this film.
7/10

Escape from L.A. (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I didn’t hate it anywhere near as much as most did; I actually liked it better than Escape from New York. There were definitely some scenes that were pretty bad, and the CG work as a whole was pretty terrible, especially for a movie from 1996. The scene with Bruce Campbell as the deranged plastic surgeon was easily the best in the entire movie.
6/10

Exit Wounds (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – Some late Steven Segal action, back from when he was almost kicking them in the knee, so a little pre-shin kicking Segal. It’s very dumb, but doesn’t take itself too seriously most of the time.
5/10

The Giver (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I thought it was average at best, but didn’t live up to the book. I think a little more exposition on the background and history of the culture would have helped, and a longer running time would have been useful, too. As a whole, it’s definitely not a bad movie, but does little to distinguish itself from the ranks of the young adult genre that has become very popular.
5.5/10

Noah (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I wanted to like this, as I think Aronofsky’s a talented director, and I generally like Russell Crowe in most everything he’s done. It definitely has an epic scope, but as a whole just isn’t that entertaining. Oh, and one more thing, if another animal had been butchered, I would have turned it off. I can watch humans ripped limb from limb and not bat an eye, but you show one little lamb getting ripped to pieces, and I quickly lose interest.
6/10

The Lone Ranger (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I’m not sure why this did so poorly. To me, it’s just a fresh coat of paint and some new characters for a PotC movie. It has that same jumbled tone, extravagant production values, and excessive running time that they all did, but is also visually stunning and very entertaining. If you liked the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and know what you’re getting into, you’ll like this just fine.
6.5/10

Gravity (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I didn’t think it was the best movie of the year, but definitely a good one nonetheless. It moves at an excellent pace, has solid acting from the two leads and the thrills never let up. Obviously Lone Survivor is the movie people look to in the last year or so for a story of never giving up, but this has an equally powerful message.

Guardians of the Galaxy - 8/10 - Not Marvel's best movie, but I still really enjoyed it. Typical Marvel formula though. Acting was great, and the way the lighting and atmosphere was used was amazing. And watching this movie only chipped the surface on the backlog of movies I have to see :/
