Winter's Tale - 2/5

Usually I am "that guy" that can explain the gist of what's going on in a movie if one or more watchers is lost. After viewing this film, I did not entirely understand what I had just viewed. Parts of it were Colin Farrel and a romance story but then some fantasy elements and wait did Russell Crowe just call Will Smith's character "Lucifer"?? Overall not a bad movie, just very long and weird... coming from me, that's saying a lot. Recommended to movie fans that had or are parents from the late 60's.

Fury - 3.5/5

This is a great WW2 movie that places emphasis on tank tactics and the part each man has to play when it comes to combat. It was as grisly as required for an authentic feel without being overtly graphic IMO. This is like a more interesting Saving Private Ryan but with armored units framing the narrative rather than infantry squads. Recommended to any fans of war movies, tanks, or Brad Pitt and Shia LeBeouf doing "accents". (they used a real Tiger and a very close Sherman model while filming; if you are a fan of tanks then this will be a 5/5)

John Wick - 3/5

Keanu Reeves is "back", shooting people and doing kung fu at the same time. There's a bit of a build up, then the gun fu starts and toward the film's conclusion there is even a semblance of story. Recommended to fans of Equilibrium, the first two Matrix movies, John Woo films, and Ip man. Whoa.

Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox - 3/5

Okay, first off I am much more a fan of Marvel's "universe" than DC's, and second off holy crap this movies goes dark and violent. Even as an extended alternate reality, seeing these super folks' casual brutality gave me pause. This is the animated equivalent of the cynical depravity seen in Watchmen made somehow more visceral because it's characters like freakin' Wonder Woman and Aquaman doing this stuff. Anyway, if you like super beings in costumes and animated films this is the highest-quality DC stuff I've seen so it's highly recommended--just be prepared for the ravishing grimness.

Dude, Flashpoint Paradox was like the darkest animated feature I've seen. Didn't Aquaman get his arm chopped off at one point? LOL

I didn't mean to imply that Saving Private Ryan was bad or boring; to me though, as a gamer, I am quickly fatigued by WW2 stories focused on some against-all-odds squad and their heroic leader.

Saving Private Ryan was a very good WW2 film in my opinion, but Fury is even better and more interesting with the small stuff--for instance, allied troops being nice to German civilians, jury-rigged solutions to mechanical problems with the tanks, and the intensely mismatched fights between German panzers with inexperienced recruits inside versus veteran Allied forces in woefully inadequate Shermans.

Last two weeks, ranked:

“Good”

All-Star Superman (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I thought this was probably the best animated DC film I’ve seen, with Under the Red Hood being a close second. Superman is slowly dying in this film, and as he’s doing so, he makes amends with Lois Lane, has a final confrontation with Lex Luthor, and saves the world one final time. The characters go through significant development, and the ending is very satisfying. A film like this really helps you understand Superman’s motivations, and why he makes such an iconic hero.
7.5/10

Hide and Seek (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – Most people hated this movie, but I thought it was a good thriller. It gives De Niro a chance to play a psycho, which I think he does quite well. It starts off like a typical ghost story type movie, but changes to a thriller after a bit. More experienced film watchers will peg it before the reveal, but it’s still enjoyable to watch everything unfold.
7.5/10

Boiler Room (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I’ve mentioned in the past I’m a sucker for the Wall Street type movies, which this is part of. Naturally, I enjoyed it. The performances are all really good, in particular Ribisi and his father’s actor (name escapes me). The relationship they share on screen is also excellent. Affleck steals the screen with his few scenes, too.
7/10

The Italian Job (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I don’t believe I’ve seen this before, but some parts seemed very familiar; I know I haven’t it seen it since 2009 (when I started tracking my watching) though. Anyway, I think it’s a good heist film, and it makes good use of its all-star cast. It feels a little like Gone in 60 Seconds and The Fast and Furious films, which is a big plus for me. There are some conflicting themes, with it being a little too humorous to be a true revenge film and a little dark to be truly similar to the aforementioned films.
7/10

“Slightly above average to average”

Superman vs. The Elite (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I thought it was overall a pretty good animated film in the DC Universe. This one was adapted from Truth, Justice, and The American Way, which I’m not too familiar with. The story is centered on Superman’s justice, and if it’s really what the world needs with today’s terrorists and evil doers. When Superman finally decides to dispense the sort of justice people are looking for (with some planning on his part), people are horrified and demand that he stop.
6.5/10

V/H/S (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – It’s a good, original idea, but it’s hit or miss for me. Some of the sequences are pretty good (the last one stood out to me), but others were pretty weak. I also thought the overarching story (of the hoodlums) was terrible, and I wanted all of them to die slow and painful deaths. That same problem is seen in several of the ‘found tapes’. I believe one reason I liked the last sequence is because the guys involved with it actual seem like normal human beings; they try to do the right thing, which turns out poorly for them in the end. Worth a watch for horror fans.
6.5/10

Splinter (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – Probably one of the best low-budget horror/thrillers I’ve ever seen. It’s in a similar vein to the Evil Dead films, with a little bit of The Thing thrown in there. A nice, young couple gets taken hostage by a couple that’s on the run from the law. Events lead them to a gas station where they end up stranded, with this parasitic creature preying on them. The hostages and the captors end up working together to survive the creature’s attacks. It’s fairly original (even if it pays homage to the classics), has likeable characters (who can actually act), and some decent creature effects for a limited budget.
6.5/10

People Like Us (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I thought it was a very average familial drama, with some good performances from Chris Pine and Elizabeth Banks. The two lead characters share the same father, but different mothers, and when their father dies, the two are unexpectedly thrust into one another’s life. The first half is good, but there’s a bit too much added drama in the last half, and it has one of those nice, neat conclusions these movies all have. Still, it’s nice to see James T. Kirk do something else, and prove he can act in a dramatic role.
6/10

Vertical Limit (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – it’s a pretty good action adventure film, with Chris O’ Donnell in the central role. It has a good bit of talent from the 90s in there, too; including Bill Paxton. It passes the time well enough, but is predictable, and does little to separate itself from the other ‘stranded in desolate conditions’ type of movies.
6/10

Hard Rain (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – Probably one of the few films where you get a villain role for Morgan Freeman. After a serious storm causes some extreme flooding, Slater and his uncle (who drive an armored truck), are tasked with getting the money out of the banks in the area before it can be washed away. Freeman and his gang of second-rate criminals decide to attempt a heist. Slater has to take these guys down, and then the town’s corrupt, greedy police officers. It’s overall your pretty typical action film from the late 80s to early 90s. It makes for entertaining viewing, but doesn’t transcend the genre.
6/10

Paranormal Activity 3 (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – this one didn’t feel quite as refreshing as the previous two entries, but it was still effective at scaring me. I can watch most any horror movie right before bed except for these. They’re usually subtle (at least in the beginning), and have good realism. If you like found footage as much as me, you’ll enjoy this one.
6/10

The Specialist (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – Another of the faceless, average action films from Sylvester Stallone. In this particular film, he plays Ray Quick, and ex-CIA bomb expert. Sharon Stone’s character contacts him for aid in taking out her parent’s murderers from many years before. A romantic relationship develops between them, and Ray’s torn between his ideals and their budding romance. It plays out like most all of these movies do. It doesn’t do anything particularly well, nor is there anything major wrong with it. It passes the time well enough, but fades into mediocrity.
6/10

“Slightly below average / decent”

Don’t be Afraid of the Dark (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – Has good acting and atmosphere for a horror film, but it was a little too cheesy for me. Essentially there are fairies living in a sink hole under the house, these fairies are extremely malevolent, and want to kill everyone in the house. It also appears that once they have killed you, you become one of them. Again, does some things well, but is better suited for those who like very fantastical horror.
5.5/10

Paranormal Activity 4 (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I think this is definitely the weakest in the series so far (haven’t seen the newest one yet). The series has always been good about building suspense by keeping you on your toes for very long periods of time, but it goes a little too far this time. You’ll be staring at the screen waiting for something to happen for minutes, and either something so small happens, it’s barely noticeable, or what happens isn’t scary at all. Better than many horror movies, but not on par with the other films in the series.
5.5/10

Altitude (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – It’s actually not too bad for a low budget horror/thriller, but not without its faults. The basic premise is this one kid in the group can think of something, and it happens. He just so happens to always do this when he’s flying in a plane – convenient, eh? There are some needlessly annoying fodder characters, but it’s pretty well done for what it is. Worth a watch for fans of Twilight Zone type stuff – definitely feels like an episode from that.
5/10

“Passable/Watchable”

40 Days and 40 Nights (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – It’s a passable enough raunchy comedy, but nothing special. You have to give it some props for trying something a little different, however, everything is else fairly traditional. It has a pretty terrible ending, too; Hartnett’s character basically gets raped to lose his 40 days of celibacy.

“Bad”

The Return (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I’m not really 100% sure what I watched. I was under the impression this was a horror movie of some sorts, but it’s actually a thriller with some aspirations to be almost a spiritual film. Unfortunately, almost nothing is explained, and the plot is extremely slow. Its 78 minutes long, so there’s also very little development of any sort. This was one of those movies that was re-released on Blu-ray with a cover that was very different from the underperforming DVD. It’s not a slasher or supernatural horror, if that’s what you’re after / thinking you’re getting into.

“Really Bad”

Shutter (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – It’s yet another woefully inadequate remake of a superior, more popular Japanese horror film. Josh Jackson and his fiancé decide to move to Japan, where he had spent some time previously. Mr. Jackson has a few skeletons in his closet, as do his one-dimensional friends/co-workers from the photography agency he works for. It relies almost exclusively on jump scares, never really succeeding to develop any actual atmosphere. I was fighting sleep the entire time I watched this, which is a huge problem for a horror movie. The American remakes of the J-horror genre have been almost entirely terrible, and this one is at the bottom of the pile.

EDIT: Definitely originally had 'closets in his skeleton' on Shutter
