Ultraviolet (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – could have probably been at least decent, but as it is, it’s pretty bad. Milla’s decent enough in the lead, and they a good base dystopian world to work with, but everything else is just terribly executed. The story is told in such a disjointed, rushed fashion you never fully understand it. The characters are also given virtually no back story. I’m not familiar with the graphic novel, which would probably help my understanding, so that needs to be mentioned.
3/10
Trance (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I like Danny Boyle, and I thought this was overall a pretty solid effort. The story begins pretty formulaic with a heist gone wrong, but quickly becomes something more, and before it’s all over, it’ll turn you once or twice. It shifts between different emotions quite well, having a few humorous scenes, as well as some real drama. Also, nude Rosario Dawson, so yeah.
6.5/10
Death Race 2 (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I liked the original a pretty good bit, in a simplistic action movie kind of way. They go for a similar feel in this, but it’s just too cheap filling, and without Statham, the concept loses a lot of juice. Fans of lower budget films might be able to get into it a little more than I could, but it’s nothing you’re likely to fall in love with.
3/10
Bernie (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – A very good and surprising performance from Jack Black make this easy to recommend. This is a story that’s so crazy it could only be true. Jack Black plays an assistant mortician in a small Texas town, where he befriends the old, rich, mean lady in the town; craziness ensues. Overall, well worth a watch for something a little quaint and different. Has a feel very similar to the Wes Anderson films.
7/10
Die Another Day (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – You’re not likely to hear this very much, but this is my favorite of the Brosnan Bond films. It feels a little less campy than his previous entries, and has lots of action. It’s obviously not on par with the Craig Bond films, but a decent action movie. Oh, and Halle Barry.
6/10
Sphere (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – Not a bad Crichton adaptation, but obviously not as good as Jurassic Park and Congo. It has a great cast, which for the most part performs well, but the plot is a little too out there at times. Not a bad watch, but probably not something worth treading back to see at this point.
6/10
Rage (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I’m very forgiving with Cage’s filmography from the last four to five years, but even I have my limits. This movie steps squarely over that boundary, into the pit of Cage, where Trespass, Seeking Justice and The Wicker Man are left to slumber for all eternity. It’s a painfully generic movie that borrows from literally every revenge movie you’ve seen, and injects nothing new into the genre. It gets a point for having an unhappy ending, which I can appreciate.
2/10
Batman: Gotham Knight (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – A collection of short stories, as opposed to a long, single storyline. I personally think that format works well with the animated features. Overall, this is good, with some of the short stories being better than others, in particular the “Working Through Pain” one.
