Olympus has Fallen - 8/10
I was extremely surprised at how good this was. Better then the last two "Die Hard" movies.
Agreed.
11-11 to 11-17
Silent House (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – starts off like your average claustrophobic horror film, but you realize pretty quickly something is odd about it. Things aren’t really revealed until right at the end, and even then, I had some questions. There’s nothing here too memorable to warrant a viewing, but if you like your horror movies to throw you a pretty serious curveball, give it go.
5/10
Darkness Falls (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – easily one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. Normally I take critics’ opinion with a grain of salt, but this is one where I should have listened. It has a ridiculous concept (the Tooth Fairy is a killer) and is coupled with some of the worst writing I’ve witnessed. The “killer” appears at times to be more of a corporeal form (it can be at two locations almost simultaneously) but the protagonist also punches it in the final act of the movie – very odd for sure. It receives a point for having a decent prologue, which is the only remotely scary part of the movie, and it’s also mercifully short at 75 minutes. Take heed of my warning, do not watch this movie.
2/10
Hangover, Part III (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I really enjoyed the first in the series (top tier comedy for me) but I found the second merely watchable. I was proud to see they took the series in a different direction, but this one has some issues, too. This is less of a pure comedy like the others, and maybe more of a dark comedy/action thriller. It’s kind of odd and doesn’t work as well as one would hope. Fortunately, it appears the Wolf Pack has been laid to rest for at least the foreseeable future.
5/10
Thor: The Dark World (Theater, 1st viewing) – As has been the case with most of the standalone movies, it feels a little scaled down in terms of importance and stakes in comparison to The Avengers; this is really just a warm-up to Age of Ultron. Much like the first installment in the series, it matches humor and action fairly well (it’s a little unbalanced at times) and never forgets its sense of fun. Hemsworth doesn’t have the part nailed down quite as well as RDJ as Iron Man, but he’s still an excellent Thor. I never really paid any attention to her in the first movie, but Kat Dennings is smoking hot (Google some pictures). This isn’t the next great movie for the MCU, but it’s another worthy installment for sure.
7.5/10
Appaloosa (Blu-ray, 2nd viewing) – The resurgence of western movies the last several years has brought us some good films, 3:10 to Yuma, True Grit, Django and No Country for Old Men to a lesser degree (in terms of it being a western). Appaloosa isn’t quite on par with the aforementioned films, but it’s still worth a watch. Mortensen and Harris make for an excellent pair of leads, and the chemistry between the two is strong. If you want to watch a western with some depth, and one that also doesn’t forget how to entertain, Appaloosa is worth a watch.
