achievements are probably one of the greater ideas to make games more fun and competetive.

Its true that not everyone is in to getting achievements but sometimes its like a badge of honor to get even one or to select achievements. For example: Getting all 1000 points on Dall of Duty 2. Anybody that played the game knows that one takes many hours of sleepless nights and pure grit. Some other examples are some of the achievements on GH 3

I think-- more or less, they add something to the game, just the fact that when I buy a new game and glance through the achievement list for the first time, there's a load of "secret" achievements in some games, and then achievements for doing things that one wouldn't really consiously think of doing. Like the "Throw x amount of beggars into walls" achievement in Assassin's Creed. I do like how they kinda force you to try a different approach though, like how you also can get the "Silent but Deadly" or some achievement in AC if you sneak about when you're about to kill the mark, and then run like hell when you run off so you don't loose any of your Sync bar.

I don't really play games specifically for the achievements, but once I start a game, I try to get all the achievements for it. I certainly think that they add some motivation to play the game multiple ways. Mass Effect is a prime example of this. Without the achievements, there's no way that most people would play the game three times, which is the bare minimum required to get all 1000 points.
