Any game pre-internet (I was about 16), was a roll of the dice. Your only opinion on whether a game will be "good" or not, was the hype from Nintendo Power, EGM, or magazines like that- that are PAID to have advertisements, and public opinion can be swayed to buy a lot more bad, overrated games.
There was no youTUBE, or public forums, other than your friends, who were likely as misinformed, or impressionable, as you.
The most OVERRATED game, in my opinion- therefore- should be ET for Atari. It helped lead to a collapse of the entire video game business- because of overhype, overproduction, and countless advertisements on television- when the actual game was very substandard.
Recently, what comes to mind, is Donkey Kong Country 64. It was, again, overhyped and over-marketed, when the actual game, was pretty bad. ET was milking its value, off the successfully juggernaut film, while DK64, was relying off the success of the far superior SNES trilogy.
Fable isn't great, but at least some casual gamers can enjoy it. FFVII, overhype or not- is the one, defining reason, why JRPGs started coming out over here, in droves. Even in its own franchise, we never *DIDN'T* miss a sequel, again. Can't say the same for (J-FFII, J-FFIII, or J-FFV). We probably wouldn't never gotten FFIX, without a VII, and a lot of people have fond memories of that era. It may not be the Citizen Kane of Final Fantasy's (that's FFVI), but it's the Star Wars of it, and while that has its own set of hype, or overhype- it's justified.
