Edit: I don't hate FFVII but it's often hailed as the greatest video game ever made and I would only rate it 3rd in the franchise. Possibly 4th depending on if I focus on Cait Sith
VIII is my favorite but it's not overrated or underrated IMO.

Who thinks FFVII is the best game of all time anyhow? If that is the case then yes, I'd say overrated. However it is a fantastic game and although it did not weather the years well, unlike some of the other games IMO. Still was a great great game with a fantastic story.

I found the story to be very vague and fragmented. It barely made sense without it's subsequent spinoff's a decade later. Despite popular belief, having so many loose ends is not a good thing considering it came out long before Squaresoft decided to make every individual game a franchise.

Even though I truly, dearly loved Oblivion and played the hell out of it long past completion, I do have to agree it's overrated. The story and characters are a downgrade from Morrowind and even Daggerfall to some extent. I mean really, only the graphics and soundtrack were an upgrade from past Elder Scrolls games, everything else took a step backwards and it was painfully obvious in the writing.
I think it got heralded as the 2nd coming of Christ because of its timing as an early 360 game and because it was the first Elder Scrolls game to a lot of folks.
Fallout 3, however, I think deserves all the hype it got and lives up to its high rating by the gaming community at large. The developers took a whole lot of what made Fallout 2 awesome and managed to translate it in to an entirely new gameplay experience that appealed to shooter fans, RPG fans, and even a lot of casuals. Not to mention the fact that people had been asking for "an elder scrolls game with guns" ever since Daggerfall.

Story made sense to me....yeah it had loose ends, but unfortunately that is an acceptable way to tell a story. I don't disagree though about VI arguably being better. That one weathered the years much better too. The whole blocky characters in VII just look stupid nowadays. Where the older 16 bit stuff just looks more "classic."
...and Snapple can just shut his dirty dirty whore mouth...
