Blasphemy. Even if he was a bad character it caused a Spiderman/Venom partnership which translated into great books.
He wasn't bad necessarily, just underwritten (from what I remember). Evil for evil's sake, is a pretty bad motivation for a storyline. "I just want to watch the world burn" is what I remember about Carnage, whereas Venom had more empathy you could relate to, while still being badass and darker than Spiderman could ever be. I still don't know why they made all the boneheaded decisions they made in Spiderman 3, but the idea of the poster, spiderman's colors reflected at a dark suit-- the dark suit should have been Venom. You don't need a 1:1 costume change. You explain that in the backstory. And that should have been the only villain, minus the end of the Goblin subplot. But you have the same general guy, (that they were going for, with Topher Grace), but under different circumstances, he uses the symbiant for evil and for self-indulgent means, rather than Peter. Venom never had an "uncle ben", and he could have flashed to his own moments of pettiness, like helping the thug get away- that caused Ben to die. Moments that show how easily Peter could have become what Venom became, with a moral conscious. Goblin subplot wrap up- have him befriend Topher's Venom, and be a better friend than Peter ever was. Have Topher woo Mary Jane- be a better BOYFRIEND than Peter ever was. The "dance number" could have been Peter looking through the window- watching Topher dancing with Mary Jane- the look in her eyes- staring at Topher, like "I'm gonna fuck you tonight", and Peter going into more depression, questioning himself, like in Spiderman 2, but deeper now. Until ultimately overcoming Venom, and showing him kindness in the end-- being the "uncle Ben" moral compass, to Topher, that kicks off their mutual respect, and could have then set up a Carnage storyline in 4, where there IS NO way to reason, with a pure psychopath. Save Sandman, save the Sinister Six, with Carnage- so it throws the book at Spiderman and Venom, and it's their loyalty and friendship, that's the core thing in question.
But of course, that's not what happened, and we needed a reboot. We did get Emma Stone though. So... yay?
