I'd recently picked up Shining Force III (Japan version) for Sega Saturn- dirt cheap, around $5, whereas the USA version goes for about $100. To my surprise, my old 2002 USA save file WORKS with the Japanese version. Despite the fact that there's no alphabet in the japanese version name menu, my characters all had their english names.
Now that I can pickup Shining Force III scenario 2 & 3 (japan only) it got me thinking about the Mass Effect series about a decade later. In both trilogies, your choices carry over in your save file, from one game to the next. Who you recruited in your party- who lives & dies. The choices you make in the world. But in Shining Force trilogy, you also have characters from 2 & 3 that you play as later- show up in the first game. So the entire trilogy was fleshed out start-to-finish. As good as Mass Effect is... just thinking if they'd planned the whole trilogy from the getgo- like if Miranda was the face of Cerebus in your ME1 campaign, & only computer files on 'the illusive man', so when Miranda brings you back in ME2, you already have a bias because it would've been like Saren bringing you back. And people like James in ME3, who felt rushed in, could've have an NPC backstory in ME1. And so on.
