The designers blame Deep Silver- they say it was their idea to take everything out. They even posted a code to download it on steam for free.
Although- it was clear before the release date what the game would be like. Anyone who bought it has no one to blame but themselves.

Yes, I would definitely recommend it. The learning curve is smooth and easy, and you will quickly master the basics and get in to the fun of tweaking your character to your playstyle.
Despite the huge amount of content and loot, inventory management is quick and intuitive, and the drop-in drop-out coop multiplies the fun (and rewards!) many times over.
