There, I said it. Everyone was thinking it but I said it.

All of a sudden reviews are relevant to everyone now that GTA is dishing out 10's. 98/100 on metacritic right now. I'm going to reserve judgment until tonight as GTA IV had similar scores.
Every rockstar game ever has has 10s.
well gta games and rdr recently sure, but not all.
Everything rock* has put out since gta2 has had 95-100 for release day reviews. Everything. Even their fucking table tennis game averaged 95 on metacritic. Rockstar pays for reviews.

But the difference is they're all good games, I've loved everything from their main franchises (GTA, Midnight Club, Max Payne etc.) ever since GTA 2, idk about their Table Tennis game though

I've never felt anything they've made was above an 8. 8 is a solid game. It's a good score. It's not perfect. I've gotten sucked into their hype machine time and time again. Gta iv, rdr, la noire... None of those was a perfect game- none of those deserved a 10, regardless of how much people may like them. With Max Payne, I quit. No more release day purchases for me.

Gta 4 sucked, dude. And like I said, an 8 is not a bad score. Rdr had nothing ground breaking or memorable. It was a solid, fun game with some flaws. Fans of the genre would love it, but it wouldn't bring people in.
Oops and I forgot bully. That was a 9 for sure.
And rockstar did have a part in la noire, not just bondi.

gta 4 was a great game, you may not of enjoyed it but that doesn't make it bad. it had some fantastic characters and the serious tone really set the vibe for their future games in rdr and now gta v.
and the fact that we have to say "it wasn't revolutionary" is a testament to the quality and how they progress the industry and open world games in general. it was great and undead nightmare dlc was good too, but it doesn't have to be revolutionary to be a great game.
and the characters in rdr were definitely memorable I would say.

It doesn't have to be revolutionary to be a great game. An 8 reflects that. Keep in mind that a 5/10 is average. That's exactly in the middle meaning the same amount of bad as good. It should have to be revolutionary to score a perfect score. 10/10. Flawless. The unicorn. No rockstar game is a unicorn.
I don't think saying it isn't revolutionary is a testiment to their contribution to the industry and genre- it's a testiment to the formulaic template they use to stamp out games. Escort missions, fetch quests, racing, rinse repeat. Ssdg. Saints Row capitalized on that to get their foot in the door before getting bored (like everyone should be by now) and carving out their own niche in the genre.
But you're riding the gta iv hype wagon still- it's not that I didn't like it- it's that it was boring, ugly, and the best characters came from the dlc. It was distracted and unfocused and the narrative struggled. It wasn't a 10. It wasn't a 9. Even some of the game's staunchest supporters have come back 6 years later to say "ok it wasn't THAT good." For you to defend a perfect score for it means talking to you is pointless on this subject.
Rockstar pays for perfect 10s in reviews, and because of that the scale for all games has been screwed up. There's no integrity left in the scoring scale. That's why if you give a game a 7, people act like you skewered it. 10s are handed out like candy, and 5s are bottom of the barrel now.
Enjoy gtav- hope it lives up to the hype commercials with explosions and cinematics and swearing have created. I'll redbox it and not get burned again.

Yeah ok, your hatred for that game is completely blinding you of how great they were, and lol at gta 4 being boring with bad characters, thats YOUR opinion your considering a fact. Again I say just because YOU didnt like it doesnt make it a great game.
Me talking about it is pointless but your herp derp these games are garbage and paid reviews and dont buy into the hype.
Cool I guess.

You both make valid points here but ultimately does'nt it come down to what each individual gamer likes and/or does'nt like?

Who are these "Fantastic" characters in GTA IV you speak of? Did Brucie and Roman really tickle your fancy? Bully's cast had twice the depth and it was a spoof. I am finding Trevor (GTAV) fairly interesting so far so maybe their is hope...the absence of notable villains is a downer though.

Lmfao
You're proving my point with every post you make. Saying it's an 8/10 is blind hatred? What planet are you from? Hatred would be "this game was pure trash. It shouldn't have been made and I'd never give it more than 2/10." Obviously if I can see through my dislike of a game to see the technical aspects that make it a solid (albeit dull) entry into the genre and give a game that I personally wouldn't play again if you paid me the extremely good score of 8/10, I'm capable of looking at something without bias. I never said the games are garbage, you said I said that, I said rockstar is a hype machine that fails to deliver.
And it's not just "my" opinion that gta iv was boring, that's a pretty widely held opinion. I just don't normally cite sources for forum posts... when I'm stating the obvious.
@Jason- the level of enjoyment from a game comes down to each gamer's likes and dislikes, sure. But there are things that aren't opinion- graphic quality, glitch issues, etc. that don't necessarily fall under opinion. Whether gta iv was a fun game or not is definitely subjective and people won't all agree, of course. Whether it was a flawless game that had nothing to be improved upon is not really an opinion. And if a game gets a 10, that's what it should be- especially from media outlets that feed into a metascore. Over time, reviews will balance out, once there are more reported, but pre-release day reviews are the most important regarding sales, and they are the ones major publishers will pay for.
And again, @snapple- it is pretty widely accepted among reviewers that certain companies pay (or compensate in some manner, whether it be cash, copies of the game months in advance, or game swag) and treat reviewers who give negative reviews poorly (removing them from media lists, blacklisting them from review copies from multiple publishers). This is common practice, and the reason that major studios' games get perfect scores from the more mainstream review sites well in advance of the release. That and the fact that they only devote a few hours to playing before assigning a final score. I'd love to discuss this with you further and give you links, if you're interested, but not here. I'll leave this thread to the fine people wanting to discuss the new gta.
ON TOPIC:
Looks like (from reviews) they went back to a more crazy, satirical script for v. Sounds better already.
