I thought Kaim's stories tried WAY too hard, and they became comedic to me rather than making me feel sad. It was like the writers started off with a list of things that would make people feel sad and they just wrote their stories around that list.
I found Lost Odyssey very bland and flavorless. I preferred Enchanted Arms, honestly, although it had a lot of faults, it moved quickly enough for me to complete it. Lost Odyssey was just so slow and predictable.
I hear Lost Odyssey lauded by so many people as some kind of artistic masterpiece, and I just don't see it. It's an ok game, but given any other game, even non RPGs, I have no problem stepping away from it.
On topic, I'm sad I won't get to play FFXIII for a while... I AM looking forward to getting away with Evol for a week though! I'm in complete agreement with Meta about the linear beginning... I just read a review that says it's 10 hours of tunnel vision followed by 60 of normal FF-style gameplay, and that sounds just fine! I'm loving the commercials that have been on this weekend, too!
<gasp>
Melissa I might have to remove you from my friend list. Didn't like LO that much?
I swear to you that was one of the best games I have ever played. I thought the story was fantastic in every way if a bit predictable at points. I never have come close to crying at video games and I did several times in that game. Even my wife who isn't a huge fan of video games wanted me to wait for her to continue the storyline just so she could watch it and find out what would happen next, I can assure you that has not happened with any other video game I have played.
All joking aside, I
guess I understand you not liking it. To each his/her own right?
On topic as well I will be playing FFXIII hardcore starting at midnight tomorrow night.....SO FREAKING EXCITED!!!!!
the only time i came close to shedding a tear in LO was when:
Spoiler: Click here to toggle spoilerthe kids' mom died. that was pretty rough, i'll admit.
the only times i actually cried were the times i had to go under water.
honestly, neither story was new or breathtaking in my opinion. LO's story was a little better, but i found EA funner and more of a challenge. not to mention mr. hilarious. cracked me up something fierce! lol.

Rinse, repeat. The only thing that tested my patience was how boring it was and how frustrated I was during the occasional battle I couldn't kill all the enemies in the first turn.
I also thought the art style was really ugly, there wasn't one attractive character in it, and that was annoying. I expect media to flood me with images of attractive people- if I want ugly people I'll go walk around walmart (no... seriously... this walmart here is sooo bad.)
Spoiler: Click here to toggle spoilerAlso, you're playing as VERY VERY old people. A GRANDPA traveling around with his wife and their grandkids... A chick and her decrepit son who calls her MOMMY. Some English chick with blue veins running through her boobs like she had them tattooed on... I'm not saying all RPG characters should be teenagers- but isn't there a middle ground between teeny bopper and ANCIENT?
And don't get me started on achievements and how the 360 has really ruined RPGs for me...
yeah, that first turn thing was what i meant when i said it tested my patience xD in LO, you can't beat enemies later in the game in the first few turns unless you're ridiculously leveled. battles generally take quite a while and you exhaust your HP/MP in a NORMAL battle.
i'll also agree with you on the characters thing. i didn't find anyone attractive in LO either. i guess it's hard to accept that if you're used to normal JRPGs, i'm guilty of this fact, i would've gladly quit the game due to the rigourous battles and realistic looking characters, but i wanted to see the story through til the end lol.
i WILL however, argue to defend Kaim. i think he's a great, deep, and well developed character. i personally liked the change in stereotype for the lead character in a JRPG...

speak for yourself!
i can't remember my exact line up, but i know i had sed, seth, kaim and a couple mages in my regular party. i can't recall going 2 turns very often, with the exception of the last DLC boss.
i did like kaim. he reminded me of cloud in some ways.
not a good reason to praise the game's story though. just my opinion.

lol i kinda did only the necesities to beat the game, that's probably why i couldn't fair so well in regular battles...
and i'm don't praise the story lol, i just think it's good and not that cliche hehe. i'll take back my comment calling it a masterpiece however after further thought. i just had horrible memories of how i almost fell asleep during disc 3 and died after going a long way without a checkpoint -_-

I have played FF for a total of 15 minutes in my life and I was in elementary school. Is this worth checking out if I have no idea what FF is or will I just not get "it."

I love cutscenes. FFXIII is freaking great so far. (Of course with being busy here I'm only like 20 minutes into the actual gameplay)

i'm sure hungry and tired from not playing FFXIII..... xD
it's almost 2:30 a.m. here. ever since i got back from midnight release, i've been unwrapping and setting up the console, then re-downloading all the stuff i had on my old 360, now just staring at my FFXIII game and LE guide while going through forums online, then off to bed lol. will start playing tomorrow
good things come to those who wait, patience is a virtue, pacing yourself is key, playing FFXIII nonstop for who knows how long and sacrificing sleep isn't good,
