Can't believe it is based on a true story.
Insidious 2 - Loved it. Was not disappointed at all. Everything starts tying together more and more and if you're into those kind of movies I highly recommend seeing it! 9/10
Great storyline keeps you guessing.
Star Trek II - 8.5/10
6/10
The Thing (1982) (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I’ve seen the prequel, but this was my first time with the original remake. I liked it better than the 2011 prequel for sure. I felt like the suspense was ratcheted up here, and the special effects are very good for a movie from 1982. The Thing, along with 30 Days of Night and The Shining all have arguably the best settings you could ask for from a horror movie. Finally, Kurt Russell is always awesome.
7/10
The Iceman (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I thought it was a pretty solid gangster/hitman flick with a very strong performance from Michael Shannon. I think the director expects viewers to know a little about the real life character, as sometimes the film makes some leaps without really too much explanation. Supporting cast is good, too, with Chris Evans playing a very atypical role for him. I liked it overall, but I think under the helm of a stronger director this could have garnered much more praise from critics and film goers alike. There’s not necessarily anything wrong with it, but it skips around a lot, and there were some areas that could have been better fleshed out.
7/10
Spy Game (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I would say it’s probably one of the late Tony Scott’s more cerebral films, with a little more focus on story and character development. All in all, it’s a decent spy/espionage flick, but at times seems a little hokey. As is often the case with movies that have flashback story lines, the past is way more interesting than the modern storyline, and this is no exception. It’s not as mind numbing with the action like Enemy of the State, but if you decide to watch, don’t expect anything as emotionally charged as Man on Fire. Most people, myself included, would say Ridley is an objectively better director than Tony was, but the latter had a good body of work, and it’s unfortunate he’s no longer with us.
6/10
The Incredible Burt Wonderstone (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – It probably should have been a lot better than it was, but it’s still a decent enough comedy. It’s a shame considering they had a pretty solid cast for this one, too. There are a handful of decent scenes in there, and you’ll laugh at the absurdity sometimes, but don’t expect a riot.
5/10
The Avengers (Blu-ray, 2nd viewing) – In the last 3-4 years I’ve become a little more partial to DC, but I’ll always be a Marvel fan at heart. I think as far as the films go, DC is a little stronger to me with the darker tone. On the other hand, the Marvel films have the fun factor locked down. The Avengers is probably one of the most fun movies you’ll ever see, and is a great culmination of the hard work Marvel put in towards their Phase I films. The interactions between the characters; from the witty banter to the fight scenes are a highlight to me. I also thought the last 30 minutes or so were amazing; it’s hard to make a scene with so much action stay interesting for so long, but they were successful. The Dark Knight trilogy and The Watchmen are my favorite comic book movies for now, but it’s hard to deny the charm and fun of The Avengers, and to a lesser degree the stand alone films that lead into it. I can’t wait to see Avengers II and beyond, as the MCU has yet to let me down.
8.5/10
The Purge (2013) 5/10 - As far as "scary" movies go, this one is not. While it had an interesting premise, it fell short as far as scares go. They utilize predictable "jump-scares" to little or no effect. I give it a 5/10 for the semi-controversial plot and the hot teenage daughter, but overall it's all very forgettable.

The Purge was terrible.

I found it watchable, not much else.
