Can't wait to see the new one
Despicable Me 2- 3/5. Solid Sequel. In fact it's better than the first, lots of laughs and cheesieness but falls short of the emotional impact of Nemo, Up, or Monsters
I fucking love Jessica Chastain.
3.5/5
Movie 43- One possibly funny part but pretty shitty literally.. 1.5/5.
Just no.
8.5/10
Tango & Cash (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I’m not normally too into these buddy cop flicks, but I actually really enjoyed this. It’s pretty cheesy, but it never takes itself seriously at all. Russell and Stallone make a great pair; their dialogue is witty and the playful banter is very entertaining. As a film, it’s hasn’t aged very well, but there’s still plenty of fun to be had.
7/10
Broken Arrow (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – This is one that’s on a lot of people’s list for guilty pleasures, but it didn’t do much for me, even on a cheesy, so bad it’s good level. It moves fast, but the action is just a distraction from the poor acting and non-existent plot.
4/10
Executive Decision (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I didn’t care much for this one, either. Unlike Broken Arrow, I felt like it moved at a snail’s pace. The acting is a bit better, but I felt like there was too much downtime, and the 130 minute runtime seemed to stretch for an eternity. I don’t really like Russell in these serious roles; he’s made for cheesy, over the top acting.
5/10
Odd Life of Timothy Green, The (DVD, 1st viewing) – much like the title would suggest, this is a very odd movie. There are some genuinely emotional moments, but I found it to be just a little too odd for me to get overly emotionally invested in it. It’s probably a little too deep for younger viewers, but too hokey for older viewers. The conflict the couple is facing doesn’t really seem like a good one for oddities, but maybe that’s just me.
6/10
Thor (Blu-ray, 2nd viewing) – with the exception of Iron Man and The Avengers, this is probably my favorite of the Phase 1 films. As is this case with Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth is perfectly cast as Thor. The addition of Natalie Portman rounds out a terrific cast; I think the best of the standalone flicks. The romance between Hemsworth and Portman doesn’t feel corny and out place, there’s some genuine flicker there. The action is good, in particular the scene on Yundheim with the frost giants. This is a very good entry for Marvel, and I’m definitely looking forward to the next installment.
8/10
Evil Dead 2013 (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I appreciate the original and what it did for the genre, but it didn’t do much for me. So I guess I was a bit apprehensive about this going in. As it stands, I was nether disappointed or surprised. The film is very intense and relentless, and has arguably the most gore and blood for a release in quite some time. I think it captures the spirit of the original films pretty well, but it’s definitely a much more serious film, and for me that’s a good thing. I prefer the slow builders (The Strangers, Vacancy), but sometimes it’s nice to watch one like this.
6.5/10
Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The (Blu-ray, 2nd viewing) – I’ve always considered Fincher one of my favorite directors, and this release only strengthened my case for him. I had not seen this since its initial theatrical release, so most of it was fresh. Rooney Mara is practically indescribable as Lisbeth Sallander. She’s sexy, scary, intelligent, confusing, the whole nine yards. I never really consider him a great actor, but Craig’s always solid; I think he makes a good Bond, and he’s great here in an entirely different role. Sometimes I feel like there’s a lot going on (definitely feels like an adaptation of a novel), but I was never confused and it says a lot about a 150 minute movie seeming too short. From what I’ve read, it seems unlikely that Fincher will be returning to direct the sequels, which is a shame. Hopefully whoever they pass them off to will bring back Craig and Mara. Overall, it’s definitely one of my favorites to be released in the last 2-3 years.
8.5/10
The Faculty (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I’ve always had a soft spot for the teen thrillers/horrors from the 90s and I generally like Rodriguez’s work, so I decided to give this a go. It definitely feels like a Kevin Williamson written work and there’s a little bit of Rodriguez there, too, though it doesn’t have quite the camp that some of his other films do. Some pretty good talent here as well, with Elijah Wood and Josh Hartnett being the strongest cast members. For a movie that’s got some years on it, it’s aged pretty well. It’s still definitely worth a look for fans of the genre or the director.
6/10
I laughed my ass off through the whole movie. One of the first movies in a while that I have been to where the crowd stood and applauded at the end. If you liked the first Grown Ups, in my opinion, this one is better.
