7/10
Soldier (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – it’s not really trying to be anything other than a sci-fi action flick, and it succeeds at that. It certainly doesn’t transcend its genre, but it is enjoyable. Kurt Russell turns in a solid performance as the stoic Soldier.
6/10
Under Siege (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I thought it was definitely one of the most campy, over the top action movies I’ve viewed in a while. I didn’t care much for it overall, but it did have Tommy Lee Jones in it, who as usual completely steals the screen. See it for him, if nothing else.
5.5/10
Cloud Atlas (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – most everyone I’ve talked to either really loved it or didn’t care for it much at all. My dad, who’s read the book, really liked it, and since he and I agree on most things, I figured I’d enjoy it too. After viewing, I can see why it didn’t really catch on with everyone. It definitely requires your full attention (which isn’t easy for most people), and the story is told at a much slower, deliberate pace than what you usually see. I did enjoy it, but I do think it’s a movie that will require another viewing before I can give it a good appraisal. I’ll probably try to read the book before I watch it again, too. From a pure visual standpoint, it was also very impressive. I also found myself thinking quite a bit afterwards, and I’d say that’s generally a good thing, and not something I get to experience much after watching a movie. I did think some of the stories were more interesting than others, but I guess that’s the nature of the beast when you have so much going on – you’re going to relate to some characters more than others. I wouldn’t suggest reading too much into the reviews, as this is a movie you’ll have to draw your own conclusions from. Definitely one of the more original movies I’ve seen in quite a while.
8/10
The Breed (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I think I got this for $5 a few months ago on Amazon. I didn’t know anything about it, but it’s got some decent actors/actresses in it, and the premise seemed decent. There’s a solid buildup, but ultimately it fails because of the dogs. They used live dogs for the duration of the film, and while I praise their desire to avoid CG, it just seems weird at times. If you’ve seen the movie, you know to what I’m referring. It tries to be a horror movie, but doesn’t provide much in that manner, and falls into the same old traps they always do.
4/10
Friday Night Lights (Blu-ray, 6th viewing) – Yes, I’ve seen this a few times, and that’s a conservative estimate, as I used to watch this fairly frequently in HS. Sports movies don’t normally do a whole lot for me, as they always seem so over the top and a lot of the drama seems artificial and forced. Although I’m not crazy about the football aspect of this movie, I do feel they completely nailed the pressures placed on players who grow up in towns like Odessa, Texas. I grew up in a town that was similar, so I can certainly relate to their situation. The stories of Boobie, Winchell, and Billingsley are all great and well told. The 5-6 central roles were all well cast and acted well, too. I think his movies are a little over the top sometimes, but generally I like Peter Berg’s work.
8/10
Dark Skies (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – Scott Stewart’s 3rd outing after Legion and Priest proves to be a much more typical alien abduction flick meets Paranormal Activity clone. It plays pretty close to the norms in the genre, but overall it’s still effective. The acting is superior for a horror movie, and the buildup is good. I also especially like the small appearance made by J.K. Simmons; he’s always a hoot. Definitely give this a shot if you like Paranormal Activity, Insidious and the recently released, Sinister.
7/10
Resident Evil (Blu-ray, 2nd viewing) – I’ve never thought the series was crap like so many seem to, but I do recognize its many flaws. This particular entry is no exception. I enjoy it, but it has many problems for sure. The opening 40 minutes or so move at a glacial pace, but everything picks up well when the zombies start running loose.
6/10
Jack the Giant Slayer (Blu-ray, 1st viewing) – I can’t find much to fault, nor can I find much to praise. It’s competently made, fairly well acted, the special effects are good, but nothing really stands out in it to me. The middling scores and ratings it’s received seem about right to me.
6.5/10
Sinister 7.5/10. Had some good tension in the beginning and a couple good jumps, but a little predictable.
Contraband 8.5/10 - Pretty straightforward but an enjoyable flick
The Oranges 5.5/10
Stand Up Guys 6.5/10
Identity Thief 4/10
-Not a good week for red box-
Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 1 - 4/10
Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 2 - 4.5/10
The Hobbit - 6/10
Man of Steel - 6/10 - Better then the last Superman? For whatever that is worth.
