The Tree of Life - 4/4
.... In terms of the story, as said before, it's deep, it's complicated, and it's not for everyone. But if you can get past the apparent absurdity of the movie that you get if you look at it at face value, you get an enthralling narrative of a boy's family issues, and Malick's belief on the meaning of life.
Hmm... I tried watching
Tree of Life and seriously couldn't get in to it, and I'm totally in to crazy and abstract movies. After reading what you've said here, I'll have to give it another viewing.
Yeah I totally see where you're coming from, it really it a bizarre movie. I'd almost go as far as to call it an experience rather than a movie.
Anyway,
Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol -
3/4
I don't really know what to say about this one. Maybe it's because I've become such a self-indulgant cinephile that I can't even watch a movie without analyzing it and trying to find a deeper meaning, but this movie didn't speak to me like it did to others. Sure it was great, hell, I'd even say it's probably one of the best of its kind (straight up Action movie, I mean), but at the end of the movie, I felt unsatisfied. Reflecting back on the movie I can find no faults other than a simply average script, yet I can't seem to give it anything higher than I did. I guess my arrogance and quest for perfection have rendered me incapable of simply sitting down and enjoying a movie anymore. What a shame.
On the actual movie, as said before, there really isn't anything bad, in fact, most of it is really fucking good. The action is plentiful and superb, the shots of the movie are gorgeous (I saw it in a normal theater, I can only imagine what it would look like to those who had the fortune of viewing it in IMAX), and sweet jesus is it intense. The acting is good, no stand out performances (though you don't really need one in a movie such as this), the plot is a little weak, but one does not go see a
Mission Impossible movie expecting Tarantino to be writing the script.
So unless you're a self-proclaimed movie snob like myself, hell, even if you are, go see this in theaters, because it really is an awesome experience. Brad Bird (oh yeah, forgot to mention that, the dude that did
The Incredibles did this) does a fantastic job creating an engaging, edge-of-your seat adventure.
