Quote by Lou83:
If you've never been over there or don't know anyone who's been over there, you have no right to talk about something you don't know nothing about. Watching CNN doesn't count, I'm sorry.
I appreciate everything you've done for this nation, but this statement simply isn't true. One could easily argue that being emotionally involved can only cloud your judgment and ability to analyze the situation. I've never been in the Middle East. I don't know anyone who's been over there. However, as a citizen of the United States, I think my opinion has just as much worth as yours.
I think the United States has definitely taken on a "911" role in the past few decades. Instead of generating goodwill for us though, it's only brought about negative feelings. With all the economic trouble we're enduring here at home, I believe the U.S. should take on a more isolationist role in the future. We can still contribute to peace-keeping efforts and conflict resolutions through the U.N. and coalitions formed by other countries. But, in order to subdue the global resentment towards America, we need to back off. If we focus our tax money on paying back our ever growing national debt instead of military spending, the situation here can improve.
While I think being an isolationist country should be our goal, I don't think we should just pack up our bags and hit the road immediately. I'll be honest, I don't know enough about the political stability (or lack thereof) over in Iraq to determine whether withdrawing now would be a good decision. However, a few more years over there to setup a self-sustaining, stable, democratic government seems like a good trade-off to me. It's in our nation's best interests to ensure Iraq and the rest of the Middle East remains stable and out of the hands of zealous radical extremists.
Thank you Random Hero, Lou83 and anyone else who is serving now or has has served in the past. You're all truly heroes, and are doing good whether some people realize it or not.

Also for the people that think Military get paid 25k a year...Your wrong. They get insentive bonus. If they re-up(re-enlist) some make 50k extra on top of hazard pay, seperation and other stuff. It is not just the officers. So don't think they get paid crap. The keep coming back for freedom and $$. Also 95% of the contracters that you see are prior military. They served there country and that helps them land a great paying job. Hense my position.....
And yes: gigidy,gigidy,!

Last time I looked into reenlistment I was only offered 15K for 5 years. Thats 3k a year...not much. Given that in anytime during those 5 years I could easily be sent off to any country for any reason. Now to be fair, re up bonus varies by MOS (Job), time in service, time left in service as well as the amount of time in the new contract being signed and other things. So for example at the same time a 63B got offered 25k for four years. Honestly you sound like a recruiter (for you non military folk, recruiters will tell ya they have the elixir of youth to get you to sign on the dotted line) because Ive yet to talk to ANYONE and have them tell me they got 50k for any amount of time. Most soldiers are happy that they get time off of work to go to school for 6 months to half ass an education or their choice of duty station because they absolutely hate their assignment. Personally I think were wasting our time, money and lives.

Ok, Everyone has some good points. Raine there are troops that are bringing good money home. I know for a fact they are. As a SPC in a certain feild(MOS) you can bring it home. You have valid points on making lots of money. Sure i do. It doesn't stop our troops from saying 'no' when they are asked to re-up. They can join the ranks of the contractor. Many have and many will. This argument can go on and on. I support our troops! I support America! I support Freedom! And i support Xbox America! And PSOLaguna i am not sure were your getting your pay scale from. Stars and stripes? I am prior military so i support our troops 100%. If you join it's your choice. Not because i say so....Don't be so quick to judge. Or jump on te band waggon. Also just like i told Raine i am not attacking you(Laguna) i am just typing. OK? Man i can't wait to talk on XBL to everyone. Because this typing is for the birds.

Heh and here I though that the security of a definite pay check twice a month and the fact that whomever gains as much rank as they can gets to be in charge was the reason people re enlisted...odd Oh I know different Army, right?

Well even though its been addressed already. Yes I am in the military, so for most of my information I can actually talk to someone who deals with re enlisting. Oh not to mention that I DID talk to someone like I stated before when I was re enlisting during my tour in Iraq. Question, RH how long has it been since you were in the military anyway? You do realize that things change, right? We'd get paid less than we already do if there was no war right now.
