Time to revive the thread
Shogun - Trivium (Heavy Metal)
Great Trivium sound. Back to the screaming from Ascendency, but still it has some nice singing parts too. Fantastic guitar, the solos are incredible and some of the riffs are just god-like. Really just an all around amazing album, with no flaws.
Score: 10/10
Songs To Listen To:
Kirisute Gomen
Torn Between Scylla and Charybdis
Down Form the Sky
Into the Mouth of Hell We March
Throes of Perdition
Insurrection
The Calamity
He Who Spawned the Furies
Of Prometheus and the Crucifix
Like Callisto to a Star in Heaven
Shogun
WAIT! That's all the songs on the album!
EXACTLY.

Eluveitie - Slania
Strictly speaking, Eluveitie plays 'paegan metal'. What this means is that on top of the usual heavy drums & guitars and yelled vocals, there is also some clean singing and a lot of music using traditional & classical instruments.
Slania is their newest album and showcases all of the band's strongest points. The vocals are mixed nicely, lower than most of the music but still discernable. This lets the varied & eclectic instrumentation shine. Eluveitie uses fiddles, flutes, mandolins, and the awesome hurdy gurdy to add an extra dimension to their songs. There are even some brief but well-done female vocals. The actual structure and note usage implies a Celtic and perhaps Gaelic influence, though the band is from Switzerland.
The more 'metal' moments of the band on this album are mostly either the fast, blast beat variety or slower, more groove-heavy passages. Only about 1/4 of the CD is very fast or heavy, and on these tracks the ethnic instruments take a backseat and accentuate the music rather than take the lead as they do on others. There are also 4 really good instrumental tracks here, including the intro which does an awesome job setting the tone for the rest of the album. The CD booklet includes all lyrics as well as notes detailing the story behind the songs and some of the history.
If you like heavy music but can appreciate some diverse instrumentation, I thoroughly recommend this album. The only reason I don't call it a 10/10 is because, while the hurdy gurdy and fiddle and all are a pleasant surprise and well-executed, the actual "metal" here is very by-the-books and hopefully their next album will contain more dynamic heaviness that will match the killer flute solos.
Score: 9 / 10

Darkest Hour-Deliver Us (Metalcore)
2007 Victory Records
This album surpassed my expectations. I wasn't sure how much I would enjoyed it, but I really like it. The songs are catch, and the screaming is good and the guitar and drum work are badass!
Score: 8.5/10
Songs to Listen Too:
Doomsayer (The Beginning of the End)- by far the best song on the album
Demon(s)
An Ethereal Drain
Tunguska
Fire in the Sky
Deliver Us
