What I got from that: Too bad for you. Your own fault for buying a product when we're going to bring out a better version months later.

I think the only thing apple does that is bad is they overprice their products heavily and push the whole style over power thing down consumers throats. The apple commercials are really stupid in that, no OS is perfect. It's always the well why do or use this when the mac does all this PLUS that. It reminds me of people that think they are smarter than the other person and close their eyes while they talk. Just look at their iMacs, for half the price I bought a computer more than 2-3 times as powerful as what I would get in an iMac for roughly 1200-1400 dollars. Their iPod's are juggernauts though, and I think I'll pick up a iPod when the new ones come out. The bigger ones always look the same, I was just waiting for bigger storage. The new nano looks too wide for me.
I guarentee they will make the newest revision of the iPhone to be that touch with phone capabilities and sell it for about 100 dollars more. I like the fact they release new stuff all of the time, but when they change the style, or make it thinner or whatnot, it makes people feel betrayed with their inferior iPod or their inferior iMac or macbook. Its kind of like going from 8 track to cassette to CD...every year. This happens every day with technology though, but apple likes to make money off of it by doing it more frequently. I can understand both sides of the argument, but this is why I stay away from apple, with the exception of the iPod, because they have the mp3 player market by the horns like MS does with the 360 and the OS. Pretty soon though, iPods will have so much storage, no one will know what exactly to do with it.

Did some quick math.
Apple and AT&T have sold approx 750K iPhones in two months. Which means the $200 price dropped allowed Apple to bilk $150 million dollars out of the early adopters on the hardware alone. No wonder so many people are pissed.

This is what Steve Jobs thinks of the loyal apple fan base that already bought an iPhone (Interview on USA Today):
Ouch. I don't think a lot of people are feeling the love from Steve right now....For those that don't know what this is, Apple dropped the price of the iPhone by $200 (to $399) just a little over two months from the original on-sale date. From what I am seeing this morning, Jobs and Apple are primarily getting sliced up from investors, analysts and the press for yesterdays announcements...
See the full interview HERE
Q: What do you say to customers who just bought a new iPhone for $599? Sorry?
A: That's technology. If they bought it this morning, they should go back to where they bought it and talk to them. If they bought it a month ago, well, that's what happens in technology.

I agree completely with Steve Jobs that technology is technology. That includes quick progress. I don't think that works here though.
Technology is quick... but 2 months quick? I doubt the cost of producing the iPhone dropped anywhere near $200. I think what this shows is just how Apple prices their products high. Apple always has revolutionary products that you're not going to be able to get elsewhere. Just look at the iPhone or Mac OS. When you buy something from Apple you pay for the product plus some extra because of the uniqueness, style, and usually perfection.
This price drop provides a glimpse into how 'over priced' Apple products are. I personally don't usually describe Apple products as over priced because there's nothing that similar to compare it to. It's no question that Apple makes a considerable profit for each product sold.

I think Apple's mistake is that image and reputation that's conveyed through those commercials. Everyone hates those intellectuals who think they're too smart to consider you or your thoughts. The commercials give that feeling and so does the 'Genius Bar.'

agreed, I don't think it is necessarily right for them to charge that much more than the product is worth, but thy can because no one is even close to them when it comes to that kind of technology, and if you think about it(be truthful) if you owned a company like apple you would over price your products to.
and I forgot who is it was but some one said earlier in this thread that all apple makes that is really nice is the Ipod, my I ask were you got that from? I use to be a MS user but I was forced to switch to apple, and let me tell you I would never go back. Apples RULES!!!! And have any of you heard of a apple owner switching to MS, you probably haven't because it does not happen!!
LOL sorry guys I love to argue about PC vs. Mac so just ignore me if I am not helping the conversation.

Yes and no. Lets wait for the final details to be worked out. Having a Journalism Major with a degree in Public Relations, this may look better than it really is. This is the tell tale quote that should cause concern:
"...and who is not receiving a rebate or any other consideration..."
So basically, any person who signed up and got some sort of discount ($25, $100, etc) may be excluded...Not to mention all the suckers that bought it second hand off e-bay...
The gesture, while looks good for PR, was forced by public pressure and may not be as good as it sounds. We will have to see once they get the program in place.

Just what I was going to say. PR is what it is all about. Money and PR. Though taking the whole PR thing, you could look at all the good things celebs do like Oprah and others as being PR-stunts.
Edit:
He uses this quote a couple of times in his letter: "and even though the technology road is bumpy" it's a basic trick. Re-enforcement.

I think they'll stay true to their word and give the store credit, but either way it's a good deal for them. I bet a large portion of the iPhone users will never collect their $100 store credit, or at least use it. Also, many that do use it will use it with a larger purchase over $100.

Jobs is such an arrogant prick. He basically mocks the early adopters, and then acts like he is doing them a favor by throwing them a $100 store credit bone. It's like "here, have a $100 STORE CREDIT to buy more apple stuff if, AND ONLY IF, you paid full price from Apple or AT&T."
It essentially means that they keep the $150 million they already scammed off customers, and its TBD how many people will not only qualify, but actually use the store credit....

I don't think I'll buy anything Apple. My dad was like 'you want an iPod?' No...I'll stick with my lil Monsta thanks. It works just as well as an iPod. Why buy something from a big name company when little companies do just as well?
