Welcome to the human race.

Some people are out to pay the bills versus getting their artistic expression heard by someone, and it's like this in every genre of music.
Some of it makes a statement, some of it pays the bills, and some of it is just music for the fun of playing music.
Ars gratia artis.
That's not to say pop music is completely without talent--just now I was listening to Lil Jon's "BME Click" for the umpteenth time. The way everyone flows in and works off each other is pretty fuckin' cool, and they use a slick combination of country words/slang and "rap staples" at roaring levels! It's almost a metal approach to rap, and that's what makes crunk so fun.

Is it educating people, making them more politically aware or positively affecting the current generation? Maybe not, but it goes hard as hell :D

It is kind of annoying, though, when people jump on the bandwagon and talk about how deep Kanye's material is, yet they have no idea about what's going on in the underground. But, I guess that's why all great underground music inevitably stays underground?

JR, have you heard of/listened to Sage Francis?

Sage Francis is absolutely amazing; his three albums have been in rotation on my mp3 player for over a month now. I'm a huge underground rap fan, but I'll admit that even Wayne and Soulja Boy get just a little play.

Miscellaneous Service
Miscellaneous Service

This user has performed some sort of miscellaneous service for Xbox America that deserves to be recognized.

I love old school hip-hop. Always been a Beastie Boys fan, Tribe Called Quest, Eric B & Rakim, Cypress Hill, Grandmaster Flash, The Pharcyde, Public Enemy, N.W.A., Run DMC, Ultramagnetic MC's.

More current hip-hop artists I'm really into: Jurassic 5, The Roots, Jedi Mind Tricks and Wu-Tang. I went to Rock the Bells two summers ago when I went out to L.A. to visit my brothers and it was badass.
This was the line-up:
Main Stage: Rage Against the Machine, Wu-Tang Clan, Cypress Hill,
The Roots, Public Enemy, Erykah Badu, Rakim, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Nas, Black Star ( Mos Def and Talib Kweli), EPMD, Pharoahe Monch, Immortal Technique, Jedi Mind Tricks, David Banner, Supernatural, Rahzel, Murs 3:16.

I do think there's a big difference between hip-hop and rap. I'm not a fan of gangsta rap by any means. N.W.A. is the closest thing to gangsta rap that I like. And in answer to Dubbs original post: a lot of hip-hop artists do play instruments or are accompanied by real musicians- The B-Boys, J5 & The Roots to name a few.

Yea man! Sage Francis is the shit!
I got a couple of his albums kickin around somewhere that get a lot of play time! :D
As well as Jedi Mind Tricks, Boom Bap Project, Danger Doom, Buck 65, and Heiroglyphics to name a few...
I honestly still don't understand how so many people think Kanye West is such an amazing rapper...I guess by todays mainstream standards he's a genius...but compared to the underground scene he's just full of shit...haha
