Wouldn't exactly think that that one 2 minute part would ruin a game but ok....
I'm not saying that those few parts ruined the game; it was a culmination of things. The online play is what I expected. Getting used to the chainsaw made it a little more fun, but all in all I am not getting nearly as much enjoyment out of this as I did with the first Gears. I played the first Gears constantly for months and months, but I am already tired of Gears 2.
I am not sure how to put it into words, but I was just expecting a lot more out of the game. That is probably not fair of me, but that is what I expected. The campaign seems like a direct rehashing of Gears 1, but on a lesser scale and with stupid little platforming things thrown in so Epic can say "Hey, at least we have
this in there, that wasn't like Gears 1." A few spoilers below, so readers beware:
For example, the tank thing. Seems to me the same as Gears 1. Instead of rolling threw a twisting and turning dilipidated city, you are rolling through a twisting and turning mountainside, but replacing the initially awe-inspiring Krill attacks are annoying Seeder missles. Skorge was a freaking joke; he was an excuse to use the new Chainsaw duels, much like what Epic had said in the L.E. DVD. After that, it turned into Panzer Dragoon Orta. I don't care for vehicle levels in games; they are there because developers think they have to be, but I do not enjoy them, and having my Gears of War turn into a flying space shooter did not really make me too happy.
The final boss was another freaking joke; I mean come on, how can you go from taking on big bad ass General Raam (who I always play as in multiplayer) to that? It was not all bad, but while I was playing the cons seemed to outway the pros in this case. I like how the graphics look, no complaints there. I know Epic is still using the Unreal Engine, so I was not expecting a brand new redesigned game, but I certainly did not expect an almost total rehashing.
The Hospital, the Prison. Going down in the depths to drop the Light Mass Bomb, going down in the depths to find the Locust Queen. The new enemies were nothing great; "Hey, everybody got scared when they heard the ominous 'Boom' sound, so how about we take that and...create five other enemies off of that one character model". The only real new enemy they introduced was the Kantus Priests.
Horde mode was a nice inclusion, 5v5 is great, I like Wingman and the party system works nicely, but there was no reason not to include at least 4 player coop on campaign. They tweaked the guns nicely so as to allow all weapons to be level, but IMO broke the chainsaw by making it too powerful compared to everything else. I like the Hammerburst; I like what they did with it and I would definitely use it in multiplayer, if I was not at a complete disadvantage against anybody with a chainsaw. It would have been nice to get into a Chainsaw duel with the Hammerburst: Having it try to block the chainsaw, and if you lose the duel the lancer goes through it or something, and if you win then you knock the chainsaw back and down them.
I am not saying it is an awful game and should be avoided; I am saying that to me, it was a bit disappointing. It seems like Epic got a bit of the Bungie disease: They set the bar with their first game, so they think that everything else they make, no matter what it is, if they stick that name on it then it is going to be great. Brand-recognition is a nice thing, but don't spit in the face of the fans that made your brand popular by doing something like that. The multiplayer is fun to get together with a group of friends, but at a little over a week after its release, after playing the first Gears almost exclusivley for months, Gears 2 has already left my CD tray.
