I didn't mean to actually come off so harsh to you Nemesis. Normally I hold you in pretty high regard as an RPG enthusiast. I guess it just caught me off guard that you chose Zelda 1 as your top NES RPG. I apologize if you took that as an attack, I didn't mean it tht way.
Also, I have never played an RPG from Japan. I can't read Japanese. So Intense Element, I am not trying to be "cool."
I do like JRPG style games. I enjoy turn based as it represents a level of strategy that you simply can't get on button mashers like Bethesda has perfected. I also came up playing pen and paper, D & D style games when I was younger, so turn based will ALWAYS appeal to me personally.
That's NOT to say that I don't like Oblivion, Fable, Zelda, Fallout, Mass Effect, or any other Action RPG or button masher. I will ALWAYS defend my opinion that just because you take on the role as a hero and go on an epic adventure whilst using swords and magic, it is not always an RPG. If you make a thread called the best RPG game ever, I want to hold the genre to a higher standard.
Just because I use strategy to succeed in Hexic, I will never call it the best strategy game ever.

nowhere in the world does it state that an RPG has to be turn based.
it amazes me how someone might believe that.
Its like one of those unwritten rules of gaming. Everyone knows that since the Final Fantasy days on the NES. The next generation of developers have crossed bred Genres thats all.
I amaze alot of people. LOL
lol yes you do.
anyway, the first RPG i ever played was secret of evermore for the SNES.
released in 1996. real time combat.
secret of mana. SNES. released in 1993. real time combat.
i don't remember playing earthbound.. but wasn't that real time? maybe not...

I don't want to even argue with you JRPG fans. There lame, boring. Video games is all about evolving into something better and the days of turn based is up. you can stick with your japanese crap and I'll stick to my great games that look great, play great and capture my imagination. by yall's standards, World of war craft should be the best. Cause any console rpg, you're gonna be taking on a role of a character.

I'm going to have to go with Knights of the Old Republic for my all time favorite.
I'm an old timer, and I will say that I've grown tired of turn based RPGs ,though some of my favorites are in fact turn based. My favorite on the NES is Dragon Warrior, which is turn based.

I'm going to get blasted for saying this but oh well. I don't consider Oblivion and Fallout 3 "true" RPG's, ignoring the fact that I hate these games anyway, at the very most these are action/adventure games with RPG elements. I respect the fact that most of you don't like turn-based RPG's and JRPG's, but you have to understand where us old-school gamers are coming from. We are used to games like Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Legend of Dragoon. Then one day everything changes and now all our favorite RPG's don't exists and Oblivion is the new "FF7". It just gets irritating to hear about how great that game is, but no one respects the games that got RPG's were they're at now.

i'd like to clear the air and remind everyone that i've been playing pretty much nothing but RPGs my whole life until the 360 came out. now it's RPGs and shooters primarily. i guess i'm not included in the old-schooler group either way though, as most of my games don't count as RPGs.
i still don't see why the secret of evermore and mana aren't considered RPGs. that's literally one of the dumbest things i've ever read. with that said though, i still think the SNES and PS1 have the best RPGs ever. chrono trigger and FF3 are my favorites on the SNES. i loved FF7, enjoyed FF9, beyond the beyond, suikoden, legends of dragoon, alundra (ooooh snap. that was real time combat. my bad. scratch that one.) etc. i know there were tons more, but i can't remember them off hand.
you don't have to be an old school RPG player to enjoy new RPGs. and to those of you holding true to the dungeons and dragons rule? ever heard of the "eye of the beholder" for the SNES? released in 1994. DaD game. real time combat.

Quote by Lady Evol:
True RPGs ARE turn based, and RPG purists will always hold that opinion. They started as turn based, they continued as such. The reason turn based RPGs are considered JRPG style now is that Americans have smaller and smaller attention spans, and American game designers take liberties with genres, and hybridize them with other genres to try to bring in todays "ADD gamers" and sell games.
The reason I mentioned 360 RPG fanboys before wasn't about console wars. It's about how since the 360 has done so much to make video games mainstream, it's also done a lot to mix all the genres together. There are VERY few true RPGs for the 360, and even fewer that succeeded. Is this bad? Not for marketing, and not for the game publishers' wallets. Not for the gamers that get pulled into games that they otherwise wouldn't ever play... (seriously, I'd have NEVER played a game like Bioshock if people hadn't called it an RPG. It... wasn't... but it was still a massively awesome game!) It's completely genius. Rather than having a niche market of purists for every genre, games like Fallout, Oblivion, Mass Effect, etc... appeal to a varied amount of gamers.
The RPG fans will buy because they hear "RPG." The gaming noobs buy because the action is fast enough to hold their attention. There's something for people who think combat is important. There's something for people who think storylines are important. 360 rpgs have something for all gamers... but they aren't true RPGs and now people are backdating the genre blur and calling older games RPGs when at the time no one even considered them RPGs. That was why Evol was talking about Zelda, and why I've been laughing at all the people who list pokemon games as the BEST RPG EVAAAR!!!
One of my all time favorite games is Vagrant Story- an excellent PS1 game that blended RPG, puzzle, action, strategy, and a bunch of other game types together. I LOVE that game. I LOVED the story, the combat, the execution... it was a great great great great game! But I never have and I never will call it an RPG just because I like it, and I like RPGs. Also, just because a game is a turn based RPG doesn't mean it was made in Japan... Japan just has a lot more commercial success with that style of game.
And yes, I do enjoy playing JRPGs. I also like anime. I want to one day take a vacation to Japan, I think it would be just a great experience. But I've never once used "So I was playing this JRPG called .hack," in a bar, trying to get laid... I've always still had to rely on my looks for that... Maybe JRPGs aren't as cool as you're giving them credit for, Intense Element.
So you said you would have never played Bioshock if it wasn't listed as a RPG?
That doesn't even make since, I play games for the gameplay. I never care about the catagory of a game. If you have that mentality, then you're gonna miss out on some great games. And while you mention it, whats wrong with mainstream? So a game is so great that ever one plays it and know because millions love it, its not cool anymore? If somethings mainstream, that means its doing something right to acheive that status.
Also, you have to understand my point of view, I'm from middle georgia. Hunting, mud trucks beers and bon fires. last week me and my uncle went to Hawkinsville to shoot AK 47's at the range. Us southern boys can't help that we need action. You're right, short attention spands. But hey, at the end of the day, the games that I play pump me up to a point where I can't sleep, and your type of "RPG" pratically puts me to sleep. so you prefer a storyline rather than action? Why not just read a book instead. Oh and Lady Evol, I do agree with you on one thing, JRPG's aren't nearly as cool as anyone makes them out to be.
Turn based sucks........

D&D is also a license. They license a lot of things. I'm talking about the specific Dungeons and Dragons pen and paper games.
