I dont know, as Evol stated, almost any game can be considered "Role Playing".
Just for the sake of it I guess Ill go with the game where you take the role of frank west, dead rising.
As for what is traditionally considered a RPG style game (lets just narrow it down to 360 titles) Ill go with Oblivion
Then again, Ive havnt really slept in the past two days (save 2 little hour-ish naps) so dont mind me

Dude... Zelda 1?? Really?

I know my requirements for calling a game an RPG are tighter than a lot of people, but ZELDA?? Every person who beat that game finished with the EXACT SAME CHARACTER! You don't control the progression of the character or even level up! It's not even an "action game with Rpg elements." It's an action adventure game with puzzle elements.

I'm not even going to pick on the choice of Pokemon as an RPG because of that choice for the NES. Especially since the list of great RPGs on NES is diverse. It's not like there was no other choices. I have 4 NES games 10 feet from me RIGHT NOW, that tea bag Zelda and leave it's raped corpse in a suitcase in the dumpster!

Oh, too soon?

I'll be the first to say it. Just because a RPG is from japan doesn't make it great. I just think people try to be cool. oh look at me, I can play a game from a different country. So what, the elder scrolls will always be the sh** to me. I've always hated the RPGs where you take turns hitting each other, there lame in my opinion. Bethesda is the best in my opinion, thats why Oblivion was game of the year and thats why fallout is game of the year. The best RPG ever

Turn based fighting, It was on the tip of my tongue earlier and I couldn't think of it. Well anyways. Turn based fighting sucks so bad. Boring and lame. Sorry, just my opinion.

i also do not like the jrpg format. turnbased games bore me. the only ones i did like were the pokemon games and i dont call that an rpg at all. so i kno its not a true rpg but my favorite ever would be tied between Star Wars KOTOR and Fallout 3
