It was rebranded in 2010 to just MTV, it's not Music Television anymore. Just MTV.
Really! I haven't watched it since before then.

That's what MTV stands for though.
Rebranding usually means an entirely different name.
Oh MTV. You got your start giving us Michael Jackson's Thriller, changed the way music was produced, and music artists are marketed- introduced the world to Beavis and Butthead... then you introduced the world to Lauren Conrad, Kristen Cavallari, Heidi Montag, Snookie, and showed teenage girls that it's okay to get pregnant at 16, because you can be featured in a hit TV show- and you're not cool unless your parents throw you a super sweet sixteen birthday party, & buy you a $50,000 car, too. To be fair, they gave us Jackass during that time period, too. But then they gave us Rob Dyrdek, a true visionary we should all emulate (/sarcasm). Having worked with most of them, I have some opinion on the subject (not Mike Judge or Jackson... obviously). Then TLC 'The Learning Channel' outdid MTV with Honey Boo Boo, and 'The History Channel' said screw it, and gave us Duck Dynasty, and Swamp People. What network IS what they stand for? Comedy Central? Not for the last 10yrs.

Comedy Central is a hell of a lot closer than most networks.
Also MTV got their start way before Thriller.
1 year is not that long...
MTV launched in 81, Thriller came out in 82. I don't think Thriller had much to do with it's success though. 1 video does not make or break a empire.

Lol yeah, went back and checked the dates right after I posted. Still they aren't known because of Thriller.
They were known then for being edgy and pushing the limits of music video's. (Namely rock and rap). They are known now for shitty reality television like Jersey Shore.

Right, I just meant that using Thriller on MTV was a game changer & everyone followed suit, giving MTV a huge boost. This was before the internet, so think about where you could watch music videos, pre-internet. It's not like they were playing on NBC. I believe the network wasn't anything to speak of, pre-Thriller, of course, I was born when the ball dropped in '81//82, so I can only speak from 2nd hand experience...
