We have a idea of how he'll do because we DID see Daredevil. When you see a actors films you can form a objective opinion of his ability and compatibility for a part. For example I don't need to see the end result to know that Jamie Kennedy would make a terrible Rooster Cogburn or James Bond. Why? Because it's obvious based on all the evidence available.
Edit: Another difference in the Heath Ledger comparison is he was 28 and just hitting the stride of his career. Ben Affleck is 41 so we sure as hell know what to expect from the guy. I'm not even sure Heath having acting talent surprised anyone in the first place. His only problem was Jack Nicholson is a insanely tough act to follow and had to reconstruct the role to make it unique.

Affleck was supposed to be really good in Phantoms. At least, Jay says so. The only serious role I can remember seeing Affleck in is Argo, and he was good there, but my favourite is him playing himself and Bartleby in Kevin Smith's movies.
Anyway, though, I mostly find it baffling that they are already going with a different Batman. Christian Bale was ok in the role and it would have helped with the continuity they are trying to set up for DC's movies like Marvel is doing.
The actual random thought I came in here to share is that I really freaking like these "10" versions of sodas. Dr Pepper 10 and Sunkist 10 are delicious, and 2g of sugar is way better than 22g+.
