The (fixed) ME3 ending wasn't really great.
The only major thing I remember, is that you saw the mass-effect relays being repaired. So the complainers who thought that everyone was stuck on Earth-- that explained that no, the relays were fixed.
--but that was a valid thought by the audience, since Bioware made it a point (a dramatic point) to see all the relays being destroyed. relays built by the prothians. sooo... valid point. Dumb on Bioware's part, they should have made that clearer.
2nd thing... people were pissed that Joker gets to bone Miranda. Or Tali. Or whomever. Crash landing in that jungle in the middle of nowhere, it looked like an Adam and Eve thing. Especially since people thought everyone else was stranded on Earth... and the Normandy made it (somewhere else), chances are Joker and (your lover) were going to have to... repopulate the species.
--so Bioware made it a point to fix that, and show the Normandy being repaired, and fly away. Again, what you SHOW the audience, both were valid assumptions. Never "assume" in filmmaking.
-------
other than that, ending was still stupid.
BUT nobody mentioned the DLC extra ending. The one where Shepard throws a party.
THAT was a very good "ending". You get everyone from ME1-3 that you saved, all together at Shepard's place, for a 3-part party. Great dialog, and a good conclusion, even though it wasn't really the end of the story. It's not about the destination, it's how you get there. So 98% of it is pretty great.

The Citadel ending was FAR superior to the ending of the game itself. All they needed was a little voice over epilog with a few details about each character and what they have done and that would have been a very nice wrap-up.

The Citadel ending is very similar to Dragon Age Inquisition's ending, in that you have a one-dimensional villain who's part of a bigger evil. You one-off the clear bad guy, but it's clear there's still a lot more to be done. Half the game was setting up the Reapers, and half of Inquisition was setting up the Inquisition's role among the kingdoms. 2 in both games is where shit will hit the fan, and 3 is consequences.
I think we can all agree ME3's ending is better than
Although there are similarities. Why Bioware thought they could one up something like this, that everyone hated, is just hubris.

You're not far off in my opinion. They thing I would change would be about the 3 being about consequences, I'd say it was more about choice.
The thing that was so great in mind about Mass Effect series was the story line. Not entirely original, I think that they based it hugely off of Babylon 5 and borrowed a lot of elements from KOTR. But it was still solid. I enjoyed how the story unfolded. Every time a decision had to be made, I found myself to be mindful of what impact it would have on the future of my game play and how I ultimately wanted the story to go. I can only think of a few games that challenge you to do that. Sean has it right with the ending. The original ending was flat and left you with a lot more questions than it did with answers. The updated ending filled in those blanks, but wasn't completely satisfying to what I had wanted to see happen. But when I look back spanning across the entire trilogy I think of the journey that was taken and not just focus on the destination. Like Mo and Sean both stated, that Citadel party was a fantastic touch, it was a shame they didn't add till after everyone had already completed the game. The Joker part was the best.
And Sean, you are dead to me. Making cracks about The Matrix. You and I will have to party chat about this one.
