i redboxed it, not having played the first. i have also been reading stuff online from people that were fans of the first, so all this is IMO plus what i've heard.
this one is not quite as immersive as the first one and not as survival-y, even on the harder difficulty and/or ranger mode. BUT I will say it's a fun and atmospheric shooter, reminds me a lot of Bioshock (the original one) but with no powers, a little less backstory and a lot more russky accents.
little stuff like wiping the crap off your gasmask and actually having to LOOK for stuff to pick up/open is neat, plus reading your journal/compass(gps) and using a lighter to burn away cobwebs in dark areas.
the game does a good job of filling large dark areas with grimy stuff to suit the mood and it isn't overly dark in a bad way.
I like how you can try to go stealthy or guns blazing and both seem viable on any of the 3 default difficulties--I don't have the Ranger mode stuff so I haven't tried.
Each chapter is nicely short, so far I am about 8 chapters in, maybe 9.
I read somewhere that there are russian strippers in this game somewhere so I am going to take a break from PC stuff to forge on ahead, bravely, looking for some precious cossack nipples & buttocks.
...of women.
+edit+ I am now 13 chapters in.
There are indeed Russian lady entertainers, probably best digital mammaries I've seen since Dante's Inferno.
There is also an entertaining theatre variety show with bad jokes and awkward fire dancing. Also, a performing mutant! And who doesn't love a good can-can dance performed by physics-enabled NPCs?
The dialog in this game is surprisingly not terrible OR overly sassy.
I guess it makes sense since it is based on a novel but I had almost forgotten what decent writing was like in games!
