maybe the RRoD is a riddle, and microsoft has yet to find the answer.

be sure and check this thread out, as my buddy Andrew repairs 360s for a low price, and has had a VERY low turnover rate of them coming back to him.

well it is another alternative for those who dont have warranty, and also want a few added perks as well, for cheap reasonable price.

Read this article myself. Didn't find it that surprising. I have two 360s now, because I couldn't wait for my first one (elite) to get back from its RROD repair. Fortunately both have worked since then. I count myself lucky.

The "Towel Trick" voids your warranty however and should not be used in most cases.

My console got an E74 after 2 and a half years. I did the repair process through XBox.com and it took about a week and a half for them to mail me the UPS shipping label. Once I got it, I mailed off my console on August 11th and it arrived at my house Aug 18th.
Overall the process was smooth and easy enough, so I don't have any complaints other than the fact that the console bricked at all. At least I got lucky with them deciding to cover E74's under the same 3 year warranty as Red Rings. I feel bad for folks that had to fork over $80 to get it fixed.
