Straw man, Meta. I'm not talking about physical attractiveness or plots that include nonviolent attacks against real world issues. I'm talking about hyper-sexualization and the idea that women are essentially useless unless they're an 8 or above on Evol's boner rating scale.
Bulging biceps and pecs aren't the same as boobs flopping around as a character runs- they're the same as a trim waist and thin legs for a female. Yes, games usually portray characters in peak physical shape. But breasts larger than their heads have nothing to do with physical fitness nor does throwing the laws of physics and gravity into the garbage for a game.
Which is all fine and good for a game like DOA Xtreme 2 or whatever that stupid volleyball game is called. Or those idiotic girls in Rumble Roses. And even for the strippers in GTA games. Because those women are basically meat brought in to pull money from the wallets of the lions. I, personally, don't care about that any more than I care about a woman choosing to sell her body or become a stripper irl.
But I specifically said "a female protagonist who is supposed to be on par with any male lead," so let's use Cloud for an example- since that's essentially who Lightning is supposed to be. Originally he was pretty blocky, but even when they remade him for the spin off stuff, he was a pretty average looking/ sized guy. He certainly didn't have a 14" dong swinging around in his pants while he ran around saving the world. So my "respect" was to the game designers for keeping Lightning on that level, rather than having ridiculous breasts flopping around in her fan service outfits. Because women (and mostly girls) need to be shown that women are worth paying attention to even if they don't flash cleavage constantly.
Girls are NOT raised to think that, regardless of how their parents raise them. Because society says things like "Wow, Olivia Wilde- she's gorgeous AND intelligent" or "Oh, Jennifer Lawrence is so quirky- even though she's beautiful, she's just like us!" Dove ads that are supposed to make girls feel good about themselves no matter what they look like say "Everyone is beautiful" because (don't you know?) beauty is clearly the only aspect of a female that matters. Morgan Webb is funny and clever, but she's basically going to always be reduced to "the hot chick from xplay" which she won't mind, since it pays her bills, but she brought female objectification to a whole new industry, and filled gaming blogs and shows with more Olivia Munns than you can shake a stick at. And then they see shows like "King of Queens," "Everybody Loves Raymond," "The George Lopez Show" and basically every sitcom ever in the history of TV since Full House. Fat, ugly, awful guys have hot wives, and girls get "fairytale movies" where the ugly girl gets a makeover and THEN a guy finds her irresistible. Her personality is the same, though... And when girls grow up, they become women who see men make more than them, and the most attractive women rise to the top of the pile every time. This is why women get the reputation for being catty, gossipy and backstabbing...
Anyway, I'm rambling, and I could LITERALLY go on for hours (I've actually done it, in a blog post from 6 years ago, ) but the point I'm trying to make is that there are plenty of average looking guys in video games, and not many average women (not intentionally, anyway, although designers do miss the mark a lot). And I like boobs- I own a pair, they're great. I'm a fan of several other women's boobs as well-- but that doesn't change the fact that "jiggle physics" subconsciously takes away credibility from female main characters by reducing them to a character who could easily be replaced by a sexy bowl of jello.
So- yay. Go Square. Although I'd actually give Tri-Ace the credit for the lack of over the top sexuality in the XIII series...
And if you don't think you're playing games that push specific agendas regarding human rights, equality, philosophy and politics, you might want to check again, sport.
