As an update to anyone interested in new Xbox rumors- here's the latest from. Verge regarding reports that the new Xbox will run through your cable box:

Because pressing the pause button has apparently become too burdensome for us. I realize these are basically all rumors up to this point, but the more I read about the new console the happier I am I'm not getting one.

Right? I know when I watch movies with my family, one of us is constantly getting up and leaving the room or whatever- we don't pause it for everyone. That could get annoying!

Yeah this is all rumors because who knows how legit the leakers are-- but it's worth noting that Microsoft does have a patent for this technology. So if it doesn't launch with the Xbox, it will come in the future. I'm assuming the "intuitive Kinect" would be something you can turn off, anyway.

Tig- if you don't have cable, that feature just wouldn't be available to you, I think. Or if you have the wrong provider.

The rumor today is that they are developing a small "online only" tabletop Xbox 360 without a disk drive to launch early next year. It's codenamed the stingray, and rumors are that it will be connectable to the nexbox as a work around for non backwards compatibility. Yay, I hope that's true! I want to buy yet another 360, and then buy my library again- entirely digitally this time!!! This is basically what I thought was weak about the ps4s presentation, as well.

Kat quit depressing me. None of this crap sounds like anything I want in a gaming system. I have my internet/phone through a cable company but don't have cable. Hopefully it will work okay for me.

I need to just stop reading about this crap and get back to games. Those are fun...

Well, VGleaks has shed a bright light of hope for anyone really bummed about the online only rumors. Here's a quote from their source- it's super long, but I didn't want to snip and edit, because it covers a few rumors:

Getting to the point there are going to be two console as part of the redesigned “Xbox Line” of products. A repackaged and reoriented Xbox 360 unit and the new “Durango” gaming console, both designed to compete with more than Sony in gaming, but against Apple as well.

When the Durango (game machine) launches, it will not support backwards compatibility for 360 games out of the box. Instead, this functionality will come from the other unit that will be networked with the Durango to provide this (not unlike the DVD add-on for the original Xbox).

The purpose of the smaller Xbox unit is to compete with Apple TV, but also provides XBLA and 360 game support which will give it an edge over Apple TV. The rumors of “always online required” comes from the smaller Xbox unit which may not have a disc drive and like Apple TV it would require a network connection and internet to provide any real functionality. It may be possible they will design both consoles to be stackable.

Durango itself will also always be online like any other device (correct with rumors), but it will not be a requirement to play local content and it will not prevent playing used games. Putting in an Xbox 360 disc into Durango will prompt the user to attach the supporting device that is sold separately. By separating the two devices and their functions it will ensure price competitiveness for both pieces of hardware. Microsoft’s delay in announcing these products from April goes more inline with not having a physical set of devices to show (among specification updates), which should be ready by May or June when this information is officially released.

The price goal of the smaller Xbox is $149 or lower and it is likely to not have a disc drive and would require a network connection. Durango will be priced competitively according to PS4′s price.

And regarding Kinect:

The development kits required several pieces of hardware as to combine all “potential” hardware which may or may not be required to work with each other, which also includes the potential for any or all devices to required a network connection, which is where most of the “required” rumors are coming from.

Agreed, no reason to buy something that lets me play my 360 games, when I already have a 360...

And I certainly hope that news is true. While still not ideal, it's better than what we've previously heard - which is possibly Microsoft's intention - throw out horrible rumors and outrage the public, then come back with slightly better rumors, that people would dislike if it were the original rumor but in comparison, will accept it. Anyway, my biggest worry is used games. I can rarely afford to buy any games brand new, so I'd have to go from 1 ~$20 used game every month or two to 1 brand new game every 3-4 months... :-\

Well I have Internet that is way to expensive for not enough bandwidth to function, I've barely been able to maintain a console working at different times and any time I call Microsoft for assistance they are as bad as the router companies charging more to fix it than it does to replace it. Samsung and best buy told me the same thing recently about my lost tv remote they wanted me to buy a $80 Logitech remote for my free blue ray player? Why would I spend $80 on something I got for free especially after I couldn't get my free app to work due to an ip conflict. I have the same issue paying Verizon for data when my device constantly is expecting to use wifi anyways? So why am I being charged for data ?

I know this jumped topic a little bit but this was an enjoyable read and I wanted to add my .02$$. Thanks for the thread kat.

I keep hearing different views on this topic and of course there is always the bits and pieces of information that get dropped along the way. The latest is that the new console won't be a true always online, but a 3G connection, sort of like a cell phone. Just enough ping to get a time stamp but not really intrusive. Yeah, right.

I prefer a wired connection for my Xbox. I have Wi-Fi and almost never use it. I can also connect my Xbox with my phones 4G but that chews up my data plan pretty fast. The XBox TV thing looks interesting but not if its slaved to my cable programing like HBO Go. I want to be able to lower my bills not have more things slaved to overpriced content.

Sources? I've never seen anything with 3G mentioned, and I'm curious.

It was mentioned very briefly by the host of an achievement podcast that I listen to on a regular basis. SO, at this point, it's hear-say. But, here are the particulars; Achievement Hounds Podcast (find them on iTunes), the host that was talking about it was Moronic Cow (that's his gamertag), and it was mentioned with about 15 minutes left in the podcast. The deal was that Verizon and M$ were trying to make an arrangement for 3G service to come standard with the new console.
