Now you're just finger pointing. The teachers at my school did a decent job, that's not to say fucking phenomenal. i mean they're teachers. Im quite sure some of your teachers didnt really give a shit either. But when you come to school, just to be a disruption to the rest of the class, to sit back and mouth off at the teacher despite this teacher going the extra mile to save your ass from repeating, it's YOUR fault.
Case and point:
11th grade year of high school. There is this dude i know who repeated 2 years because he would just not care about anything. The Principal warned this fuck he wouldnt stand for anything else. This was the kind of guy who would smoke in the bathroom, talk right over anyone, walk out the front door when he came to school after being dropped off the bus, etc. My 9th grade English Teacher Ms. Lee had this fucker EVERY YEAR because she requested him, and she taught remedial English to the failures in the higher grades in other blocks and had only 1 9th grade class the rest of the day. This woman went above and beyond for this guy, from what she told me this dude was really smart (i never saw it, dude was just a waste of space in my eyes because he never said an intelligent thing). She made this dude sit in class and work but half the time he never showed up, but Ms. Lee knew this fucker's game of walking out the front door so she would be there to greet him and turn him around. Anyway, long story short, this woman did everything in her power for 3 FUCKING YEARS PEOPLE to get this guy on the right track because she saw some sort of potential in him.
He didnt graduate and ended up dropping out but Ms. Lee was on his ass every step of the way. Fast forward 3 years, guy got his GED and was in my college studying Principles of Engineering with me. I asked him what had changed, dude told me Ms. Lee called his house, spoke to him, and told him how disappointed in him she was that he had more than what he showed in school, and his life did not have to be what his friend's made him believe. Apparently this changed this guy's mind, because here he is in a class i never thought to see him in.
So, i dont want to hear shit about "It's the teacher's fault." It stems from somewhere, and it comes down to either the parents or the person and the choices they make. We live in a really apathetic generation, and kids expect everything to be handed to them.

It's case IN point. FYI.
Have you ever been out of the south?
It is NOT 40% of southerners who are dumb as shit, it's 75%. And probably 20% of the remaining 25% are transplants from other areas. 5% of native southerners could hold their own against the intelligent people throughout the rest of the country.
The south is backwards. The rules, values and education are backwards. Schools fail kids long before they hit high school. Kids are groomed for janitorial jobs starting in elementary jobs. They aren't just "expected" to go to college like in the north.
Yes, there are exceptions. But they do not become the rule just because they serve your purposes.
Parents fail their kids by not being involved or expecting anything from their kids. Teachers fail their kids by not expecting any more that adequate yearly progress so they can get the "no child left behind" money. The ones who do care have it beaten out of them by all the parents who don't care. Because of these failures, kids grow up expecting nothing. Intelligent kids are easily overlooked because those teachers who are "determined to help people" overlook them in favor of the kids who need extra attention. Then the smart kids get bored and start slipping through the cracks. And everyone is brought down to the level of the lowest common denominator.
Stereotypes are stereotypes for a reason.
