My brother in law bought it from a yard sale for $80 then sold it to me after taking all the games for $50. I tested it for a week before I went out and bought stuff for it. I was without a 360 for over a year so I really was hoping this one would last longer than it did. I didn't have a warranty on it, since it was from a yard sale.
When I had the system standing up, I couldn't get through an entire match (roughly 3 minutes)on Black Ops vs bots without it shutting down. But when I lay it down with a fan blowing air through the side I went, so far, through 12 matches without it shutting down on me. I just hope it last long enough for me to take it to Gamestop to trade it in for a new system.

I had one like that. It was filled with insane amounts of dust and what I can only imagine was some kind of glittery powder residue (I suspect it was from body glitter makeup powders floating in the air). I removed the white shell, but I didn't break the ms seal. A good cleaning with a can of air has given me going on 6 months more time with it. It's still kicking, too.

What sucks is that I just went out and bought a 120GB hard drive, headset, 3 months of gold and 7 games only to have a brick sitting next to my TV. I have $0 left to even think about getting another system.
You should send it to theevol1. He fixes consoles, he'd probably help you out. He's making something special for the summer tourney!

If your Xbox is a Xenon or Zephyr, the penny trick won't do a thing. Besides, regardless of whether or it has a Hana chip or Ana chip, the penny trick doesn't solve overheating or any other cause of the two lights. You're just using a random YouTube trick on a problem that you don't understand.
The penny trick would only work on E74 (one red light), 0022 (three red lights) and sometimes 0031 (three red lights). I could explain how and why if you don't want to take my word for it, but people rarely care.
What actually needs to be done is removal of the heat sinks and cleaning and reapplication of thermal paste. The reason that your Xbox is displaying two red lights is that the heat sinks are not seating off properly on one or both of your chips. Also clean all of the dust out of your console while it's open.
Whatever you do, do not attempt to purposely overheat your 360. I always tell people this, but definitely in this case, I can't stress it enough! If you don't have 1 or 3 rings or an audio with no video, there's a reasonable chance no damage has been done yet. Towel tricks and toothpicks in the fans will certainly assure that damage is done.
If you have any other questions or would like to know more about what is actually happening, feel free to PM me any time.

I opened it up, cleaned the hell out of it (it needed it) and now testing to see if that fixed my problem. I have a tube of arctic silver http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835100007 from when I upgraded my processor.
How would I go about removing the heat sinks to reapply? Any help will be much appreciated.
To take the heatsinks off, you will need a torx9. An 8 will work in a pinch. You will have to take the motherboard completely out of the chassis to get to the Xclamps on the underside of the board. So take the DVD drive out and unplug the two cables from it carefully. Remove the white plastic shroud and unplug the fan wires. Now put both of your thumbs on the metal plate on top of the fan and use your index fingers to gently pull forward on the top of the fan while prying the metal plate up. The fans will come right out once they clear the plate.
Now flip the console over and remove all screws from the metal chassis including the 8 small black ones in the X shaped indents. Flip it back over and take the three small black screws out of the RF board. (ring of light board with the power button on it.) Pull that small board out and the motherboard is now free. Grab the GPU heatsink. It's the tall one. (you might want to use gloves or a towel just to make sure you don't slice your fingers.) Gently ease the board out of the chassis and be careful! Breaking any one component off of a board could spell disaster!
Once you have the board out, the Xclamps will be obvious. Now for the tricky part! Using a flathead screwdriver at least 4mm wide, put the driver in one of the ends of the Xclamps that is clipped on the leg bolts. You are trying to pry the under C part off of the post using the small shoulder on the top part. You might want to put a small towel around the screwdriver head because it can take quite a bit of force to pop the first one off. One slip of the screwdriver can gouge the board and damage traces or break components off. Once you get one popped, the second will be easier. After the second, it will come right off. Repeat on the other Xclamp and you're done!

Alright, so I did all that, reapplied the thermal paste, reassembled the Xbox, tested on Black Ops again and 2 red rings after 2 minutes. I am about to set fire to the Xbox.
Holding down the sync button and clicking the tray open I get the 0012 error code.

The error code means that it is the GPU that is reading too hot.
You might need to do an Xclamp replacement. A lot of people put the clamps back on, but I replace them on every console I repair. Your clamps must not be putting enough force on your chips for the heatsinks to draw out the heat and dissipate it.
Are you positive that you cleaned all of the old thermal paste off and put a paper thin layer of new paste on? Too much or too little paste can cause quick overheating. Make sure, because Xclamp replacement can be pretty involved and and you will have to buy some stuff.
Also, make sure that your fan is coming on. Sometimes people overlook little things like that that make a huge difference!

I cleaned all the thermal paste off (Microsoft did a shit job of applying it in the first place), cleaned it with Arcticlean and reapplied the thermal paste. I noticed when I was taking off the Xclamps that the screws were really loose. I didn't screw them in really tight, didn't know if I should or not. The fan was also running, made sure to check that 1st. After doing all that I noticed that the fans were nowhere near as loud as they were before. I use to be able to hear them over my fan and air conditioner.
Yeah, MS sucks at thermal pasting. They just blob it on and smash the heatsinks down onto it and squash it everywhere. It is one of the biggest reasons that the first xboxes failed so much combined with a few other factors.

I took the case off, again, and tightened all the screws down tight. I've been running Black Ops for 16 minutes without any problems. Fans are quiet again and so far, knock on wood, everything is running fine. I seriously hope it's fixed until I can go buy a new console.

Awesome! I hope so too!
