As a former drummer in my high school marching band, I would classify it as a performing art. They do have competitions but for the most part we just performed halftime shows.

If COMPETITIVE CHEERLEADING is a sport, marching band has been a sport for ages
now, yes, there are fat people in band. theres also fat people in football, so does that mean its not a sport?
try holding up an instrument for about 7-10 mins, maybe more, w/out ever being able to let it drop. make it fun, do it w/ a tuba. that thing has to stay properly on your shoulder the whole, or at least for the piece until the drum major lets you put your horns down. or, carry a 20-40lb drum using ONLY your back on a carrier, after already having had to play cadences over and over the first half. theres a LOT more physical prowess then you think, atleast dring the shows.
also, a lot of bands go to multiple band competitions during the season. BoA, is one. valdosta state has one. pickens county has a comp as well. theres a LOT of marching band competitions, and you dont have to beat so many other marching bands to go to them. you just go to get rated and have fun, even if there are still "winners" and some bands go there for the sole purpose of getting high ratings and first place
