OT: super excited for some Slayer DLC!
XbA's Weekly News Recap 4/1/2012 - 4/7/2012
Alright folks, I realize that the board had quite a bit of a lull there for a while, followed by a burst of activity over the past week or so. So much so, that I'm sure its been a bit difficult to keep up, especially with all of the news and articles that have hit. That's why we're going to have a Weekly News Recap from now on; a weekly post on Saturdays filling you in on all the latest news, updates and articles over the past week. So instead of pouring over tons of new posts and going back to the News archive in order to catch up, you will be able to relax and sip your coffee while scrolling through this one post!
First off, XbA got some new writers recently. That's right, you can be thankful (or blame) all this flurry of new activity on AJ, Kat, and Crawford696! Coming out on top of all of the great submissions we had for staff writers, these three have been doing some nice work lately.
How nice, you may ask? Well, AJ has brought back XbA's popular Community Spotlight! That's right, its back and here to stay! Thanks to user demand, Adrian has been profiled this month, so go ahead and give it a read if you haven't already. I'd do it when no one is around though; they may wonder what you're laughing at.
If that wall of text isn't enough to satisfy you, then you can check out Kat's review of Kingdoms of Amalur. Definitely give this a read if you have any interest in this RPG. That is, of course if you still aren't sight-seeing in Skyrim!
Speaking of Skyrim, Crawford has done a nice job of keep us up to date in the Xbox world, detailing that Skyrim's 1.5 patch is available now, offering a slew of fixes (and hopefully no game-breaking backwards dragons), as well as some interesting new features, including a kill cam!
SNK highlights XBLA's Deal of the Week, offering several King of Fighters games, as well as Metal Slug and Trouble witches for up to half off. This sale is good until this Tuesday, so don't debate too much longer! Windows Phone sees the release of the popular strategy game Civilization, as well as offering the flight action game MiniSquadron for a dollar off, bringing the titles price down to $1.99. Completionists be aware, however, that MiniSquadron does contain an unobtainable achievement at the moment, worth a quarter of the titles 200 GamerScore.
Mini has also pointed out that WP7 is having an Easter Sale going on for an undisclosed amount of time, offering a handful of games at the couch-change price of 99 cents! Some of the games include Angry Birds, deBlob and Toy Soldiers, so if you have a Windows Phone don't hesitate to check that out!
For those of you who have beef with Mass Effect 3's ending, there may still be hope! BioWare has offered some details to the Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut. No, its not a money grabbing re-release of Mass Effect 3 with a new title and a few costume color swaps. This isn't Capcom! What it will be is a free DLC available some time this summer offering an epilogue of sorts and some more closure to the ending of ME3. I haven't made my way through it yet, but judging from the complaints around the Web this has to come as some good news.
Changing stories and entire genres, those of you who love Rhythm games will be excited to hear that Harmonix is working on Rock Band Blitz! It looks like it will be an Xbox Live Arcade release and, quite a departure from the norm, will not require players to purchase a new set of plastic peripherals. Indeed, this new iteration of Rock Band will be played with a controller, giving the player access to all of the instruments, as well as the ability to change instruments mid-song. RB: Blitz is set to be backwards compatible with all previous RB DLC, and will offer a new setlist of 25 songs, with the ability to import those songs into Rock Band 3. So, if you're really against this new direction, you can pay the XBLA price for 25 new songs to add to your Rock Band repertoire.
Speaking of your ever-growing RB repertoire, Slayer will be coming to the Rock Band Store on April 10th! That's right, feel free to trade in your copy of GH3, since you will be able to access all of Slayer's face-melting glory exclusively from Rock Band!
If Slayer wasn't enough, Metal Heads may be happy to hear that the Fourth Annual Golden Gods Award Show will be free to stream over Xbox Live. The award show, which airs this Wednesday, April 11th, will be aired live over Xbox Live! Those of you eager to check it out, note that the app is up for download now, but as I understand it will be useless until the show commences on Wednesday.
Achievement hunters will be glad to hear that Need For Speed: Carbon's Race Week achievement is still up for grabs. Best of all, players need only play an online match in order to obtain it. I can't say how easy it will be to mop up the rest of these pesky EA cheevos, but this one sounds like a cakewalk now!
Penny Arcade fans that have been longing to experience Episode 3 will be happy to note that it is still on its way, but in the form of an Indie Game. That's right, no achievements tied to this release. On the upside, however, the game will only cost a few dollars at most, so true Penny Arcade fans can experience it without much thought on cost.
Finally, mid-May will see the release of some new Chrome Xbox controllers! These shiny objects feature the new, transforming D-Pad as well as some newly designed analog sticks, so those of you in the market for a new controller may want to hold off a month or so and grab up one of these gorgeous goodies.
Well, that's the what we have for you this week! Quite a bit to digest, but we're here to give you a better handle on it. Before I go, I'd like to give a shout-out to Revelation for the swanky banner. Now hopefully I don't grow horns like a Fox News reporter! Until next week, stay classy, XbA!
