If space is infinite, and stars are suns for other solar systems, it's completely ridiculous to assume there are not other planets like ours, or possibly more evolved. It is, however, doubtful that there would ever be any kind of contact. Any life would be millions of light years away, and there's a slim chance that technology could even be developed that could travel between solar systems in a person's life span.

This.

Plus if space is NOT infinite what is past it?

Food for thought.

Space isnt infinite its ever expanding beyond it is supposed to be a world of nothing which hurts someones head to try and imagine no light or dark

No. Because if it's getting bigger all the time, at any exact moment in time is has a definite size. Although in a millisecond it's bigger, yet again. If something can be defined even for the smallest measure of time, it's definite, not infinite. Hope that makes sense.

Another way to look at it is, space is expanding at the speed of light, always. If we could somehow travel faster than light, eventually you would catch up to the edge of space and obviously, only theories about what's out there at the edge exist since it's impossible to know. But I'm sure if you got out there, you would find out that Mini is a gamesaver. :p

That makes sense. But its like... even if at any given moment it has an exact size, its still growing constantly. So its infinite. I think lol.

Like if you had a machine that just counted numbers NON STOP... like FOREVER. Sure we could look at it that exact moment and see what number we're at... but its not gonna stay there. Its limitless, which is what infinite is. My brain hurts.

I saw the movie Paul a few weeks ago. Does that count?

Seriously though, I don't put too much stock into UFO sightings. Are we the only intelligent life in the universe? I doubt it but if there are other life forms out there why haven't they either contacted or conquered us? The only answer that I can come up with is that these lifeforms are probably at or around our level of technology and do not have the capability to get here. When extended space travel is finally attained it will probably up to us to initiate contact...... and watch, we humans will f_ck it up somehow. Any thoughts to this theory?

Pi isn't infinite, pi is a concept. Saying it's infinite is like saying the letter A is infinite. Pi doesn't exist except in our imaginations. It is true that the numbers we've made up and assign to things will continue to go on as far as we are able to calculate out what pi is, but we have no way of knowing if that is a limitation of our calculation tools or an inherent limitation of the "laws" of math as we know it.

Space isn't infinite, space too is a concept. You can say space is everything outside our atmosphere, but you're talking about dark matter and lots of other crap. There is no such thing as "no thing" except a singularity as we understand it (if we understand it) and there is also no such thing as "nothing" because that would mean it doesn't exist, either in concept or reality (ie essence versus existence).

We definitely try to talk about things we don't understand by putting them in to terms we do understand, but this is also a case of either accepting whatever possible observations and calculations we can make, or not accepting anything.

We can only look so far out and see "things" that are the oldest we have ever observed--that of course doesn't mean there are or are not older things "further" beyond that.

Thinking of "space" as being this area, or this shape, that exists and then there is some thing or no thing beyond it is a method of approaching an abstract concept and getting some idea of what is going on with it but not at all "correct" in any sense.

Zooming all of these concepts out as much as I can (because I don't have a full understanding of esoteric cosmological theories nor quantum level stuff) to the point that matter and energy are the same things on different "wavelengths" or "vibrations", you could say the background heat/radiation in "space" that is outside our "space" is also "some thing" that exists beyond what we can really observe.

Calling heat a thing is odd I know, but it's also weird to call light a thing yet we can easily just use the term photons instead and it all makes sense when you get in to things like light years and the speed of light and astronomical distances.

There is also the different theories about how many "dimensions" we "exist" in and since most theories agree that it's more than just the 3 we can easily write about, it adds another complication factor in grasping comprehensive ideas about the nature of the observable universe.

The other part of this discussion is that there ARE books out there that put all of this in to terms you can discuss and theories that can be debated. Calling them "facts" is as retarded as life gets, but I feel like it comes down to either you can agree that scientists, astronomers and cosmologists have come up with these ideas and terms and use them when you discuss these things, or you can say you don't agree with any of the stuff they have come up with and construct your own theories instead.

"For all intents and purposes, space is infinite" is not necessarily correct. Calling it infinite is only practical if your intent and or purpose requires space to be infinite. I can easily say my intent is to find out to what degree neutrinos interact with matter as we know it, and for the purposes of creating repeatable experiments with observable results, I need to assume space is not infinite but instead has tons of "dark matter" all over the place where regular matter is not indicated.

This is pretty much what I believe now, I didn't always until a few months ago though. Long and boring story short, it happened when I was watching Lost. (I'm going to put it in a spoiler, if you were like me and just now started watching it and haven't gotten up to that point or haven't started it all.)

Spoiler: Click here to toggle spoiler

"Jack: Everyone who was in the rear of the plane is dead. Rose: They're probably thinking the same thing about us."

To them, if they do in fact exist, we are those aliens. They're all wondering when we are going to invade THEM. It's all just a matter of perspective.

Of course, this is just my humble opinion.
