As most of you know, due to a court order I had to move out of my house last November and away from my kids. Last night one of my kids informed me that he had 4 F's and one D. His mother is unconcerned about his grades and only seems focused on her loser boyfriend. WTF?

I would request a copy and send to your attorney. Custody law does not tolerate abuse or neglect. With the importance of education I would seek council if this constitutes neglect. Just my worthless thoughts

Actually, not one bit worthless. My attorney on the other hand is worthless. A great suggestion. My attorney won't do anything to rock the boat right now, the divorce is almost finalized. The agreements have been signed and submitted to the court. I have no idea how long this is going to take. In spite of all of the red tape, tracking his grades is a really good idea. When I lived with the boys, they all had excellent grades. I moved out and suddenly things have gone south. They want me to get my own place so they can move in with me - I cook and they are teenagers - and I also communicate very well with them.

My question is what are you doing to help? If you have good communication with them, you should know why the grades are dropping. Your ex and her boyfriend are not in class with the kids, so I don't see how it is entirely their fault. Also, just passing the blame around isn't going to improve the kids' grades. I'm quite sure it isn't a case of neglect or abuse on her part, otherwise the kids would not be living with her considering the courts are involved already. I can't tell you why your kids grades are slumping, but I can say that if your attitude towards your ex is the same in real life as it is on here, that isn't helping. Just my two cents, and I'm sure I sound like a dick, but I've been through the same shit, as have millions of other people. Hopefully you and your ex learn how to coexist and the kids get back on track.

I mean the way it usually goes from what I understand is that the grade drops are largely a result of the enormous stress the divorce puts on them in conjunction with lack of communication/attention from the custodial parent. The kids feel like their lives are being torn apart and there is absolutely nothing they can do about it, so its only natural that grades, social life, interest in activities etc. see a drastic decrease

When I lived with the boys, they had my constant attention and we would talk about everything - I always let them say anything as long as it wasn't in anger. That was 24-7. Homework was automatic because I had homework, too. If I have to do homework, so do you. It always got done. Now I see them 2 days a week for 4 hours at a time. I am not as much a part of their lives as I would like. Most of the time I do spend with them is spent trying to re-establish that connection - it's not easy. And it seems that they never have homework these days. All I can do at this point - it seems - is to contact the school and try to figure out what the heck is going on and go from there.
