I would seriously like to see what the ex-Epic guys would come up with if Capcom basically kickstarted them for a RE/Biohazard reboot. Say what you want about his PR or the Gears franchise, Cliff Bleszinski and the rest of that crew are the real deal. They've been crafting games for a long time on a variety of platforms and if nothing else they are good at creating visceral experiences and intuitive gameplay.
They could even call it BIOHAZARD: RESIDENT EVIL to eliminate superfluous, redundant branding.
I liked the last two Resident Evils and the DMC remake. Keep it coming Crapcom. Also Dragons Dogma 2 kthx.

People go apeshit & bananas over their RE games. I think 2 is considered the "really good one"? I played the original one on my PSx and hated it. I watched a roommate play 4 on GCN and I enjoyed it vicariously through her.
IMO you should play through 5 once with a friend because the game's mechanics and style are interesting and fun to experience with someone else. 6 is also good with a buddy. Wouldn't recommend either for the story or campaign alone.
To wit, I must vehemently agree with your declaration. I also like pie. Pie is relatively simple to create, can be composed of a wide variety of tasty fillings, and half of the experience is smelling the sumbitch while it's cooking.

I like RE 5 and 6 very much, more than most people do. But they're not horror games by any means. I just look at them as action games, and it's fine. Maybe RE 7 will go back to horror, who knows?

I agree CVX is the best one with RE2 coming in second.....gotta disagree about RE1 not being scary, I have very fond memories of holding my chest when those dogs jumped through the window for the first time....but then again I was only a child.
