Samuri used katana, and samuri never had katanas until they raided a bushido village and killed everyone. Samuri carried nakamaki and mainly used bows, they used sowrds as a last resort, but after the raid on the bushido village and all the men they lost because they were inexpierienced with swords they decided to disipline themselves in sword handling. The first swords they used were straight edge swords, but they found out that it had so much force againt their hands and wrist it would easily fatigue them and then later got the idea after killing a practioner of Ninjutsu who had a curved blade (the Katana) To use that, as it had less as you would refer to now as recoil when cutting through or into objects.

The recoil to the body was to fatiguing and was GREATLY reduced by the curvature shape of the sword. And they were technically Ninja swords before the samuri even produced the. And there is still a man who is the decendent of the greatast swords craftsman alive still crafting swords today, The decsendant of Muramasa (often confused with Masamune)
