Response : SE did a great job patching up the holes this go around. I love the entire cast (with Vanille actually being my favorite). Many people take issue with the linearity of this game but apart from open world and sandbox style games there really isn't any choice to the classic RPGs of yore.
The battle system is great fun and challenging and the plot and characters are top notch. I played this game in it's entirety as close to non stop as full time college and work would allow.
My humble opnion.

the linearity i don't really mind to be honest. if anything it helps to keep you on track of the main storyline. although i would have liked to explored a town or two. i understand the story dictates that you can't, but i'm sure the scriptwritters could've squeezed in some resistance viillage or even allow you to explore the airship of the Cavalry.
and if Meta doesn't 1000 the game before me (which is likely), i'll probably be the 3rd

Actually, I don't think I'm going to 1k it. I missed a couple of the accessories here and there and accidentally sold a charm and a weapon before I knew better, so that kills that Achievement.
So then, since I know I can't get that, I also don't feel like doing every Cie'th Stone mission.
My plan right now is just to get the Growth Egg and then grind enough to max out everyone, then I'll go ahead and return the game to Blockbuster.
Speaking of that, I found out a little more, so anyone else that is in a hurry to get to Mission 55 and get a growth egg, this is what you need to do:
Missions 1-3, then 5 and 7, then 12 and 14. Now that you have a chocobo, you can go to Oerba to get Mission 55 and then go back to Archylte Plains for the mark.
I had finally done 1-3 & 5 and went to where 12 was, it was inactive and right by a red barrier and the game says nothing about what to do, so I had to read online and found out you have to do 7 as well to activate it, then doing the red stone mission will deactivate that particular barrier if you're planning on doing more missions later.

Wow, really? Hmm... I got the vast majority of treasure chests since most of them aren't really hidden well... maybe after I finish leveling I will set up a checklist. If it's doable, I'll go for it, I just definitely don't want to start all the way over so soon after finishing it.
Thanks again, Set! You are as helpful as you are lovable! xD
Also, as I found out right now, even after doing mission 12 you have to actually go past where the barrier was and view a cutscene before the mission 14 stone activates. This was giving me fits but I am finally just minutes away from having a CHOCOBO!

XD, I was extremely excited about the chocobo! Even though there are only a few places you get to use it (granted one you will frequent for almost 20 hours) it is totally worth it.
On the issue of the Growth Egg and mission 55, I hope you have a better strategy than I had. Using Vanille and her powerful death spell can be quite a blast (especially if you get lucky and kill the beastie off within the first few rounds) but her low HP and terrible Sentinel skills make her a tough main to use if you aren't leveled enough in your roles. Fang may be able to hold the pressure for a bit and a vanille/fang/hope set up as med/sen/med should be able to get you back on top, but the real threat of the fight isn't the big guy but the five little guys that constantly attack for heavy damage.
If I get around to a second playthrough (which is likely due to my heavy Vanille withdraw) I'll try and see what the earliest is that you can win the mission. My guess is late chapter 13 with an over leveled party (probably one who spent a great deal of time nearly maxing out all roles during the second to last screen in the game vs.jabberwocky, bandersnatch and co.)
And yeah, there's only a handful of items you can't buy back and only two I think that you have to dismantle another accessory to get.
Anyway, good luck!

Weehaw so I ended up having to do Mission 13 as well but I did finally get my Chocobo and later my Growth Egg. I also went back and fixed Bhakti which I had forgotten about, and I already had 10,000 steps on Pulse so that was win-win.
I took the time to level a few weapons and got 3 pairs of sprint shoes, now I am just running around like a maniac carving through everything, as soon as I get 3 TP I find an Adamantoise and down it.
To get Long Guis to show up, you have to do all the missions of the Cie'th stones that are in that little circle, right?
Boy it's fun just cruising around on the back of a big stinky bird. I really like how Uematsu-san did the chocobo theme this time.
+edit+ Oh, and I got very lucky doing Mission 55. The Death spell stuck on the second cast, so I had plenty of time to mop up the little snots. I have never had Death stick that quickly, I'm glad it happened there.

Nice! That's some crazy good luck! Since you can fight the turtles there's a great spot where you can make a wide loop and kill off four or five within 20 minutes. At 80k apiece that's a minimum of 320k every 20 minutes or 960k an hour.
Easy strat for downing Adamantoise and Adamantortoise :
Fang/Vanille/Hope - genji gloves work wonders all else should be damage boosting or earth/physical resistances.
syn/syn/syn for buffs
rav/rav/rav to stagger a leg
com/med/med to use highwind and kill off the leg (if not a one hit kill build the chain gauge more first)
repeat for second leg
sab/sab/sab for around five debuffs
rav/rav/rav again to stagger and
com/com/com once the chain gauge gets to 900%
drop a highwind at the last second if you haven't killed it by the time the chain gauge depletes. And should he get back up, repeat the process.
My best time was 1:50 seconds. Not bad and no grinding for tp first.
