A new report confirms earlier rumors that Sony will announce a $399 40GB PS3 as early as this week.

$399 PS3 rumors just won't die
According to Sky News, a manufacturing source has revealed that Taiwanese FoxConn (which also produces PS2s) will make the rumored $399 PS3.

An announcement could come sometime this week in an effort to "spoil" the high profile launch of Halo 3 for Xbox 360 says Sky.

Previous reports speculated that Sony would drop the price of the 80GB PS3 to match the current price ($499) of the now discontinued 60GB PS3.

In order to offer a $399 PS3, Sky News reports that Sony will either remove the console's USB ports or backwards compatibility.

Removing the USB ports? No backwards compatibility?

Let me be the first to say that, if they remove the backwards compatibility, that will easily be the worst decision that they could make. Some people still have PS2 and PS1 games and are planning on getting rid of their PS2s in order to actually purchase the PS3.

They probably meant the HDMI ports, not USB....

That's a bit rediculous. Removing the USB ports would be really stupid since all of their peripherials work on it, and removing backwards compatability would be the most retarded thing Sony could do at this point (though I wouldn't put it past them). I know several people that bought a PS3 simply to play their PS2 games upscaled. As for removing the HDMI port, that would be equally as asinine, since Microsoft has a console at a cheaper price point with an HDMI port. Here's an idea Sony: Remove the freaking blu-ray player nobody wants!
